Responsibilities
- Own close calendar and cutoff: inspect close calendar, dependencies, source-system readiness, cutoff rules, unresolved prior-period items, and staffing coverage; sequence the close, assign owners, enforce cutoff, surface blockers early, and certify readiness by tower; prevent or surface a close slips because a dependency or unsupported late entry was discovered after the deadline.
- Own journal-entry governance: inspect entry purpose, source support, preparer, approver, account mapping, period, materiality, recurring logic, reversal, and segregation of duties; approve or return entries based on evidence and policy, then preserve the review trail; prevent or surface review becomes a click-through formality and an unsupported or duplicate entry reaches the ledger.
- Own reconciliation quality: inspect account purpose, source balance, general-ledger balance, reconciling items, aging, clearing plan, reviewer evidence, and materiality; set the reconciliation standard, challenge stale items, and certify that unresolved differences are understood; prevent or surface aged reconciling items roll forward until they mask a misstatement.
- Own accounting judgment and escalation: inspect transaction facts, authoritative guidance, alternatives, materiality, control implications, system capability, and disclosure effect; frame the issue, document the first-line position, and escalate consequential or novel conclusions to controllership; prevent or surface the team applies an undocumented position inconsistently across periods.
- Own team capacity and development: inspect close workload, review bottlenecks, leave, cross-training, role expectations, quality signals, and growth goals; allocate work, build backup coverage, coach review quality, and address performance with evidence; prevent or surface one person becomes the only operator of a critical close tower.
- Own audit support and close improvement: inspect PBC list, evidence owners, auditor questions, recurring review notes, manual steps, defects, and automation opportunities; coordinate evidence, resolve review notes, and convert recurring close pain into controlled process changes; prevent or surface audit support overwhelms the close because evidence and ownership were not designed into the process.
- Produce and maintain Monthly Close Calendar and Ownership Map, Journal Entry and Reconciliation Review Matrix, Accounting Judgment and Escalation Memo, Accounting Team Capacity and Cross-Training Plan, and Audit PBC and Close Improvement Register as reviewable working artifacts.
- Manage the Accounting Manager delegation edges to Accountant, Senior Accountant, and Domain senior accountants, including staffing, workload, review, coaching, growth, performance evidence, succession, and escalation needed to deliver the books close accurately and on time, every material balance is supported, review is substantive rather than ceremonial, and the accounting team can execute without heroics or hidden key-person dependencies

Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Accounting Manager is the manager who runs the general-accounting team and owns the monthly close, including the close calendar, general-ledger integrity, journal-entry and reconciliation review, team capacity, first-line accounting judgment, audit support, and close improvement. This role is accountable for the books close accurately and on time, every material balance is supported, review is substantive rather than ceremonial, and the accounting team can execute without heroics or hidden key-person dependencies. Its operating remit spans close calendar and cutoff, journal-entry governance, reconciliation quality, accounting judgment and escalation, team capacity and development, and audit support and close improvement. At Accounting Manager altitude, it leads through Accountant, Senior Accountant, and Domain senior accountants and remains accountable for staffing, clarity, performance, review quality, controls, and the aggregate result across close calendar and cutoff and journal-entry governance rather than performing every task personally. The role's exact boundary is load-bearing:
- Versus Senior Accountant: This seat owns the team, close calendar, performance system, review ceiling, and aggregate result; the Senior Accountant owns complex work and peer review without people or close-calendar authority.
- Versus Revenue Accounting Manager: This seat owns the general ledger and broad close; the Revenue Accounting Manager owns revenue recognition, contract accounting, deferred revenue, and the revenue sub-ledger.
