Backend Engineer

IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Builds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Server frameworks and languages
  • Analytics & BI
  • Team Chat & Collaboration
  • Cache and traffic control
  • QA & Testing
  • Observability & Monitoring

Deliverables

  • Design documents
  • Review checklists
  • Technical standards
  • Delivery and sequencing plans

Responsibilities

  • Design stable HTTP, RPC, or event contracts with explicit validation, authorization, error semantics, versioning, and compatibility.
  • Implement server-side business logic with clear invariants, transaction boundaries, and auditability where required.
  • Model application data and choose consistency, idempotency, caching, and concurrency behavior from the business failure model.
  • Build queue and worker flows with retry classification, dead-letter handling, deduplication, backpressure, and replay safety.
  • Plan backward-compatible schema, event, and API migrations across independently deployed consumers.
  • Write unit, integration, contract, and failure-path tests for service behavior.
  • Profile and improve request latency, throughput, allocation, query behavior, and dependency usage.
  • Add service metrics, structured logs, traces, and business correctness signals.

The essence of this seat

The Backend Engineer is the server-side specialist who designs and implements APIs, services, business logic, data access, queues, and workers, owning the correctness, latency, throughput, and compatibility of the application service tier.

Signature move

What this role does

The Backend Engineer is the server-side specialist who designs and implements APIs, services, business logic, data access, queues, and workers, owning the correctness, latency, throughput, and compatibility of the application service tier. Its signature evidence includes the service contract, the data invariant map, and the asynchronous workflow state machine. The earliest proof that the seat is working is visible in these leading signals: contracts reviewed before implementation; failure and retry semantics tested; migrations staged with compatibility telemetry. It remains an individual contributor reporting through Engineering Manager, with senior review for cross-service or irreversible data design. This package covers only the canonical Backend Engineer roster title. It is the server-side layer specialist for APIs, services, business logic, application data access, queues, and workers. Product, safety, subscriptions, payments, and money-infrastructure titles remain separate 1:1 role packages whose domain constraints cannot be treated as generic backend context. The altitude and seams are explicit. The Frontend Engineer owns client rendering, interaction, and browser state, while this seat owns server contracts and authoritative business behavior. The Full-Stack Engineer spans a vertical slice across client and server, while this seat chooses backend depth and service-tier quality. The Infrastructure Engineer owns the compute, network, and platform substrate, while this seat writes the product services that run on it. The Database Engineer owns engine-level performance, replication, recovery, and data-tier reliability, while this seat models and accesses data for application behavior. Two mental models should be visible in the work. The contract is the product of the backend. Internal code can change freely only while external semantics, errors, side effects, and compatibility remain deliberate. Delivery can repeat. Networks duplicate, reorder, delay, and lose responses. Design every side effect around what a retry actually means. For this Backend Engineer, those ideas must be visible in its signature artifacts, review request, release decision, and hand-off rather than remaining vocabulary.
