Backend Engineer - Product Safety
IC / Practitioner
Independently auditedBuilds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.
Audited package
Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.
Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Detection runtime
- Model and feature serving
- Case and moderation workflow
- Event and graph processing
- Experimentation & Feature Flags
- Observability & Monitoring
- Analytics & BI
- Source and delivery
Deliverables
- Design documents
- Review checklists
- Technical standards
- Delivery and sequencing plans
Responsibilities
- Build in-path and asynchronous safety detection using approved rules, classifiers, behavioral signals, and policy-versioned configuration.
- Design report, triage, moderation, escalation, appeal, and reversal workflows as explicit state machines with clear ownership.
- Implement enforcement actions that are scoped, time-bounded where appropriate, auditable, and reversible under approved policy.
- Measure precision, recall, calibration, wrongful-action rate, missed-harm rate, moderation backlog, time to action, and appeal outcomes by meaningful slice.
- Create reviewer tooling that presents necessary evidence, limits sensitive-data exposure, and captures structured decision reasons.
- Detect and investigate system-level evasion, coordinated abuse, signal manipulation, and reviewer or queue gaming with specialist partners.
- Stage safety changes with shadow evaluation, holdouts where ethical, human review, stop conditions, and rollback or threshold restoration.
- Maintain immutable enforcement and appeal history so decisions can be explained, audited, corrected, and learned from.
The essence of this seat
The Backend Engineer - Product Safety is an IC individual contributor and the backend engineer who builds abuse detection, moderation, reporting, appeals, and enforcement systems that protect users.
Signature move
Define the harm, protected subject, prohibited behavior, evidence source, and approved policy before choosing a classifier or enforcement mechanism
What good looks like
uses slice and base-rate analysis, introduces reversible protection, and does not let a stable aggregate conceal concentrated harm
Decision rights
- - - The implementation and operation of approved safety classifiers, rules, report flows, moderation queues, enforcement actions, appeal hooks, and audit trails
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Backend Engineer - Product Safety is an IC individual contributor and the backend engineer who builds abuse detection, moderation, reporting, appeals, and enforcement systems that protect users. The role's working domain is in-path safety classification, report and moderation workflows, reversible enforcement, appeal handling, adversarial abuse evolution, and auditability of high-impact actions. The seat is accountable for a safety system that reduces real user harm while controlling wrongful action, preserving review and appeal, and explaining every enforcement decision. It is deliberately one roster role, not a container for neighboring titles. The boundary is behavioral and operational: this seat implements safety constraints and enforcement mechanisms that may block product behavior; the Backend Engineer - Product builds the product capability and general user-facing service path; this seat protects users from harmful behavior and content across the product; the Software Engineer - Brand Safety, Ads protects advertisers and inventory from unsafe adjacency in the ads domain; this seat builds the technical detection, workflow, and enforcement systems; the Trust & Safety Analyst owns case investigation and applies approved policy to individual cases. What separates a strong Backend Engineer - Product Safety from a generic engineer is domain judgment under failure. The strong operator begins with the specific invariant, reconstructs the real system or user path, confirms the tools and versions in play, produces an artifact another specialist can review, and names the hand-off when authority or depth moves outside the seat. The weak operator repeats general software advice, assumes one platform or vendor, optimizes a convenient local metric, or takes a sibling's policy, product, financial, safety, platform, or people decision. The core emphasis for this package is in-path safety classification and enforcement, moderation and appeal workflows, the harm-versus-wrongful-action precision and recall trade, reversibility and human review, adversarial abuse patterns, and auditability of enforcement decisions.
