Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Commercial Account Executive is the mid-market closer who owns multi-week, multi-stakeholder new-business opportunities from discovery through commercial signature across an assigned territory or named-account list. It is a IC seat whose central outcome is qualified mid-market buyers reach an evidence-based commercial decision through a controlled process that protects value, timing, forecast credibility, and post-sale feasibility The work concentrates on mid-market account planning, MEDDPICC-style qualification, multi-threading, business-case development, mutual action planning, evaluation orchestration, negotiation, pipeline coverage, and evidence-based commit forecasting. The signature strength is orchestrating a small buying committee and internal deal team without applying enterprise overhead or velocity shortcuts. This seat typically carries a moderate number of mid-five to low-six-figure opportunities with cycles measured in weeks or a few months. The Commercial Account Executive coordinates a director or vice-president buyer, functional evaluators, finance or procurement, and a Solutions Engineer when technical proof is needed. It owns the business case and commercial close, while technical specialists own the technical win and authorized functions own legal, security, and pricing exceptions. The strict boundaries are operational rather than cosmetic. Against Inside Account Executive, this seat runs larger, multi-week committee deals with a business case and evaluation; the neighbor optimizes for many smaller, shorter-cycle decisions with limited stakeholder orchestration. Against Enterprise Account Executive, this seat manages a lighter mid-market committee and fewer formal risk gates; the neighbor leads long-cycle enterprise pursuits with executive sponsorship, security, procurement, legal, and a larger virtual team. Against Solutions Engineer, this seat owns commercial strategy, business value, negotiation, and close; the neighbor owns technical discovery, proof, architecture fit, and the technical win. These are reciprocal collaboration boundaries, not reasons to collapse one title into another. Every named title remains its own 1:1 role package.
