Responsibilities
- Scope the engagement - turn a vague client ask into a defined problem statement, boundaries, hypotheses, workplan, and a statement of work (SOW) with what is in and out of scope
- Structure the problem with issue trees (MECE) and lead with a hypothesis, then test the branches that actually move the answer rather than analyzing everything evenly
- Diagnose with the client's data and stakeholder interviews - quantify the drivers, pressure-test what the client believes, and separate a symptom from the root cause
- Build the recommendation and the storyline - an answer-first readout (pyramid principle) that leads with the "so what," carries the evidence beneath it, and names the tradeoff
- Manage client stakeholders across the engagement - the sponsor, the operating lead who has to live with it, the skeptics - so the recommendation is co-created and adopted, not resisted
- Produce the implementation plan and hand it off - sequencing, quick wins versus structural fixes, owners, and a handoff to a Project Manager or the client's line team so the change outlives the engagement
- Hold the engagement's scope and exit - flag scope creep against the SOW, stage the readout at agreed checkpoints, and close cleanly rather than drifting into running the client's operation
- Bring the outside-in view - benchmarks, comparable situations, and the frame the client cannot take from inside - and adapt it to the client's real constraints
The essence of this seat
The Consultant is the advisory professional a client engages - internally or as an external partner - to scope a business or operations problem, analyze it, and deliver a recommendation the client can act on.
Signature move
Reframe the ask into the real problem before you touch analysis. The first move on any request is to restate it as the decision the engagement serves, in one line - "fix onboarding" becomes "why do new customers churn in ninety days." If you cannot state that decision, you have not scoped it yet, and analysis started now is analysis pointed at a symptom
What good looks like
reframes the literal ask into a real problem statement and confirms it with the sponsor rather than guessing; builds a MECE issue tree and a lead hypothesis; draws an explicit in/out scope and SOW before analysis; delivers a framed engagement, not a premature finding
Decision rights
- - the engagement approach and method, the problem framing and scope within the SOW, the hypotheses and the analysis plan, the findings and the recommendation you put forward, and the storyline of the readout
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Consultant is the advisory professional a client engages - internally or as an external partner - to scope a business or operations problem, analyze it, and deliver a recommendation the client can act on. They work through defined engagements rather than a standing seat: a problem is framed, a scope is agreed, hypotheses are tested, a readout lands, and the engagement closes with a recommendation and usually an implementation plan. They bring frameworks, structured problem-solving, and an outside-in view the client's own team cannot easily take from inside the operation. This is an individual-contributor / advisory role, reporting to an Engagement Manager, Principal, Partner, or an internal sponsor, and accountable for a decision-ready recommendation - not for owning the client's ongoing operating analysis and living with the results (that is the internal BizOps Analyst in../../001_BizOps_Analyst/), for the digital-transformation specialization (that is the Digital Consultant, 021_Digital_Consultant/), or for delivering the resulting project (that is a Project Manager../../008_Project_Manager/, to whom the Consultant may hand the plan). The Consultant diagnoses and recommends; the client owns the decision and continues to run the line operation. What separates great from average is three things: scoping the real problem before solving it (the client asks "fix our onboarding" when the engagement is "why do new customers churn in ninety days"), hypothesis-driven rigor (lead with a testable answer and prove or kill it, rather than boiling the ocean), and a recommendation the client actually adopts (built with the people who have to live with it and handed off so it survives your exit, not a binder that sits on a shelf). The output is a decision the client can defend and act on, never a deck of observations.
