Database Engineer

IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Turns the company's data into decisions people actually trust. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Relational database engines
  • Document and distributed operational stores
  • Query and engine analysis
  • Migration and backfill
  • IT Ops (RMM/Asset/Backup)
  • Observability & Monitoring
  • GRC & Compliance

Deliverables

  • Dashboards and reports
  • Data models and documentation
  • Analysis write-ups
  • Data quality standards

Responsibilities

  • Profile operational workloads and diagnose query latency, throughput, locking, deadlocks, connection pressure, cache behavior, replication lag, and storage or compute saturation.
  • Review and improve schema, indexes, constraints, transaction boundaries, query plans, and application access patterns with Backend Engineers.
  • Design and execute safe online schema and data migrations using compatibility phases, bounded backfills, verification, and rollback or forward recovery.
  • Build and maintain replication, high-availability, failover, backup, restore, point-in-time recovery, and disaster-recovery procedures and evidence.
  • Define database telemetry, dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and capacity forecasts with SRE and Infrastructure.
  • Plan database upgrades, engine or topology changes, maintenance, and managed-service transitions with explicit compatibility and failure testing.
  • Investigate database incidents and corruption or integrity signals, preserve evidence, and provide incident command with database-specific containment and recovery options.
  • Set and review database access, encryption, audit, retention, and privileged-operation implementations with Security and compliance owners.

The essence of this seat

The Database Engineer is the engineer who owns operational database systems at the engine and data-tier level: query behavior, indexing, transactions, replication, high availability, backup and point-in-time recovery, capacity, and safe database change for the applications that depend on them.

Signature move

What this role does

The Database Engineer is the engineer who owns operational database systems at the engine and data-tier level: query behavior, indexing, transactions, replication, high availability, backup and point-in-time recovery, capacity, and safe database change for the applications that depend on them. Its signature evidence includes the database workload profile, the query-plan analysis, and the online migration plan. The earliest proof that the seat is working is visible in these leading signals: percent of consequential database changes rehearsed with production-shaped data and recovery evidence; restore and failover exercises meeting stated recovery-point and recovery-time targets; query and transaction regressions caught before production. It remains an individual contributor reporting through Engineering Manager or Database Engineering Manager, with SRE, Infrastructure, Security, and application owners as required reviewers. This package covers only the Database Engineer roster title. The database engine and deployment model are swappable, but the seat remains centered on operational database behavior, query plans, indexes, transactions, replication, recovery, and capacity. Database reliability, data engineering, backend, and platform titles remain separate 1:1 role packages rather than absorbed context. The altitude and seams are explicit. The Backend Engineer owns application services, domain models, and application-side data access, while this seat owns engine behavior, query plans, indexes, locking, replication, recovery, and database reliability. The Data Engineer owns analytical pipelines, warehouses, and data products, while this seat owns operational and transactional database systems used by running applications. The SRE owns service reliability policy, SLO governance, incident command, and release gating, while this seat owns the database implementation, database evidence, and safe recovery options inside that reliability system. The Infrastructure Engineer owns compute, network, storage, and platform primitives, while this seat owns the database engine, topology, configuration, and data-tier behavior that run on the substrate. Two mental models should be visible in the work. The query plan is a hypothesis about data. A slow plan is often the optimizer acting rationally on wrong cardinality, stale statistics, parameter assumptions, missing structure, or a workload the design never expected. Compare estimate to actual before prescribing an index. Correctness is the first performance constraint. A faster query that weakens isolation, loses writes, duplicates effects, or makes recovery uncertain is not an optimization. State the invariant before changing the engine or transaction. For this Database Engineer, those ideas must be visible in its signature artifacts, review request, release decision, and hand-off rather than remaining vocabulary.
