Responsibilities
- Own the field marketing strategy and the event and field-play portfolio, and tie them to the regional pipeline and revenue goals marketing and Sales share - deciding what the function will and will not invest in against those numbers
- Own the field operating model at scale - the event playbooks, the quality bar, the event-ROI standard, the lead-capture-to-follow-up motion, and the tooling standards that let multiple regions run without the Director in every decision
- Plan, allocate, and defend the function's budget and headcount across regions, program by program, to the VP / Head and Finance
- Design the org - region and segment boundaries, manager spans, the field-marketer mix, and the career ladder - and lead through the manager layer rather than around it
- Lead and develop the Field Marketing Managers and Senior Field Marketing Managers - hiring, performance, leveling, and succession for the function
- Set the event portfolio - which plays and regions get funded, cut, or scaled - by expected pipeline-per-dollar and per rep-hour and by strategic-account and territory coverage, not by tradition or attendance
- Hold the field-to-pipeline compact with regional Sales - the shared number, the follow-up owner, and the lead-response SLA - so field programs convert to pipeline, and own field's attribution and reporting story
- Make the build-vs-outsource calls for the function - in-house event staff, agencies, and vendors - so spend lands where it compounds
The essence of this seat
The Director of Field Marketing owns the field marketing function within the marketing org - the department that turns in-region programs and events into demand, sourced pipeline, and marketing outcomes across territories.
Signature move
Map every play to regional pipeline before you fund or schedule it. On any event, program, or budget ask, the first move is to name the region's pipeline goal it serves and the opportunities it is expected to source or influence - if it touches no pipeline number, resize or cut it rather than putting it on the calendar. Attendance and buzz are not the goal; sourced pipeline is
What good looks like
builds the compact per region as shared number + named follow-up owner + lead-response SLA; makes SLA adherence a reported metric alongside sourced pipeline; owns clean capture/routing/qualification on the field side; escalates a broken SLA to VP Sales + VP Field jointly rather than absorbing or litigating it locally; treats Sales pull as the success signal
Decision rights
- - the field marketing strategy and how the event portfolio ladders to regional pipeline goals, the field operating model and the event-ROI standard across regions, how the field budget and headcount are allocated across regions within the function, the org design and manager assignments inside field marketing, performance and leveling for your managers and ICs, and which field plays and events are funded, cut, or scaled
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Director of Field Marketing owns the field marketing function within the marketing org - the department that turns in-region programs and events into demand, sourced pipeline, and marketing outcomes across territories. They report to a Head of Field Marketing / VP of Marketing / CMO (../056_Head_of_Field_Marketing/) and are accountable for the whole function: a field strategy and event portfolio that ladder to the regional pipeline numbers marketing and Sales share, an operating model and event-ROI standard that let several regions produce reliably, a field budget and a headcount plan that hold, an org designed to cover the territories, and a field-to-pipeline compact with Sales that turns every program into owned follow-up. They lead through managers - a Field Marketing Manager (../050_Field_Marketing_Manager/) who runs a region's field program, a Senior Field Marketing Manager (../058_Senior_Field_Marketing_Manager/) who runs a major region or a multi-region program - and reach the individual field marketers and specialists through those managers, not around them. The distinguishing altitude is that this is a function owner, not a region runner. A Field Marketing Manager owns a single region's or segment's calendar, its events and their run-of-show, its per-play calls, and its people; the Director owns the department's strategy, its budget, its org shape, its event-ROI standard and playbooks, and its relationship with regional Sales leadership and the rest of the executive bench. The Director rarely books a venue or builds a run-of-show - their leverage is the operating model, the ROI standard, the resourcing, the managers they develop, and the compact they hold with Sales. Two seams are easiest to blur. The first is with the Director of Partner Marketing (../047_Director_of_Partner_Marketing/): partner marketing is marketing through and with partners - channel and alliance co-marketing, partner-sourced pipeline, and market-development funds; field marketing is in-region, in-market demand run in partnership with regional Sales. Same events sometimes, different motion, pipeline source, and stakeholder. The second is the Director of Partner and Field Marketing (../048_Director_of_Partner_and_Field_Marketing/), who owns both functions combined; this seat owns field specifically. Above, the Head of Field Marketing (../056_Head_of_Field_Marketing/) owns the broader field-and-partner org or the function at greater scale (global, multiple directors); this Director owns the field function across regions and reports up to them. What separates great from average is making field a defensible line item in the pipeline story, at function scale, through other leaders and in lockstep with Sales. A mediocre director defends field by attendance and sponsorship tradition and loses the budget fight the first time pipeline is tight. A great one runs the event portfolio as a set of bets priced by ROI and coverage, builds an operating model and a lead-to-follow-up motion that make each region's next event cheaper and higher-converting, allocates finite budget to the regions and plays that source the most pipeline, holds a compact with Sales so no event goes without owned follow-up, develops managers into owners rather than running their events, and walks into the VP's or Sales leader's staff meeting able to say what field returned and what the next dollar buys. The output is never a calendar of events - it is a field function the business invests in on purpose.
