Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Strategy and portfolio planning
  • Analytics & BI
  • FP&A & Planning
  • Workforce and talent systems
  • Observability & Monitoring
  • Architecture & Diagramming
  • GRC & Compliance
  • Team Chat & Collaboration

Deliverables

  • Design documents
  • Review checklists
  • Technical standards
  • Delivery and sequencing plans

Responsibilities

  • Set the engineering strategy for the assigned organization, including its outcome thesis, technical posture, operating assumptions, measures, and explicit non-priorities.
  • Translate strategy into an annual and quarterly operating plan with funded outcomes, team ownership, dependencies, confidence, and review points.
  • Own the approved organization budget and headcount allocation, including hiring sequence, vendor and infrastructure trade-offs, vacancy risk, and the consequences of reallocation.
  • Design and maintain team charters, manager spans, leadership layers, senior-IC roles, and interfaces so ownership follows the architecture and business need.
  • Manage and develop Engineering Managers and Senior Engineering Managers through evidence-based expectations, feedback, succession, and performance systems.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Data, Security, Finance, and business leaders on portfolio choices while holding engineering feasibility, capacity, quality, and technical truth.
  • Govern delivery at organization altitude by inspecting outcomes, dependency resolution, forecast confidence, and the decisions that managers cannot resolve locally.
  • Own the organization's technical-health investment posture across reliability, security, maintainability, architecture risk, platform leverage, and operational readiness.

The essence of this seat

The Engineering Director is the entry director responsible for a defined engineering organization, normally several teams led through Engineering Managers and, where the shape warrants it, a Senior Engineering Manager.

Signature move

Begin with the organization's mandate and measurable outcomes, then test whether the current teams, managers, budget, and technical system can actually produce them

What good looks like

turns broad direction into funded choices; reconciles effective capacity and technical obligations; preserves Product priority and Engineering commitment authority; exposes displaced work and escalates an envelope mismatch

Decision rights

  • - the engineering strategy and operating plan for the assigned organization
  • - the allocation of an approved budget and headcount envelope across teams
  • - the manager structure, team charters, leadership cadence, hiring sequence, succession coverage, and organization-health interventions within scope
  • - delivery, quality, reliability, security, and technical-risk commitments the organization can credibly make
  • - the truthfulness of forecasts and the decision to stop or re-sequence work when the plan no longer fits capacity or risk

What this role does

The Engineering Director is the entry director responsible for a defined engineering organization, normally several teams led through Engineering Managers and, where the shape warrants it, a Senior Engineering Manager. The seat translates company and product direction into an engineering strategy, funded operating plan, manager system, and technical-health posture for that organization. It owns more than delivery aggregation: it decides how the organization is shaped, how its approved budget and headcount are allocated, which outcomes are funded, what technical and reliability risk is carried, how leadership coverage is built, and what commitments are credible. The director's core unit is the organization, not a project and not an individual team. The work is to make several teams behave as one coherent capability: clear charters, durable interfaces, managers who can own their teams, principal ICs with explicit technical authority, a portfolio that fits capacity, and a review system that exposes truth early. A strong Engineering Director turns strategy into choices and operating evidence. A weak one becomes a status router, preserves every initiative, bypasses managers, or uses reorganization as a substitute for prioritization and performance management. This seat is deliberately bounded. It is above the Senior Engineering Manager because it sets the defined organization's strategy, owns its budget, and designs its leadership structure. It is below the Director of Engineering in this roster because that neighbor carries a broader product-line or multi-org strategic remit. It is below VP Engineering because the VP owns the function or major division, total budget, leadership architecture, and executive commitments. Technical leaders own technical decisions within charter; Product owns product priority; People and the authorized chain govern consequential employment decisions. The Engineering Director integrates those authorities into one operating organization without absorbing them.
