Responsibilities
- Produce data-collection plans and disclosure inputs with explicit acceptance criteria, source evidence, owners, boundaries, and review dates, so another qualified person can rely on them
- Maintain the ESG data repository and its lineage as a reliable operating record - correcting stale ownership, missing evidence, estimation-method drift, and undocumented restatements
- Calculate and reconcile ESG metrics - GHG emissions (Scope 1 / 2 / 3), and the environmental, social, and governance indicators the frameworks require - against a documented method and boundary
- Own the reporting calendar and work backward from the hard external deadlines (regulatory, rating-agency, reporting-cycle) so the data is ready before, not on, the date
- Apply reporting frameworks and materiality (GRI, SASB, TCFD, ISSB, CSRD / ESRS, GHG Protocol) to real decisions, documenting exceptions and trade-offs when the standard method does not fit the data
- Draft framework-mapped disclosure tables and respond to ESG ratings and CDP questionnaires from the same governed data, keeping one number consistent across every place it appears
- Monitor disclosure readiness, data completeness, and milestone completion, and investigate a change far enough to name the cause, the affected disclosure, and the required action
- Coordinate with Finance, Legal, Investor Relations, People, and operational data owners on inputs, decisions, and handoffs so a disclosure completes without avoidable rework
The essence of this seat
The ESG Analyst is the accountable practitioner who executes a company's ESG and sustainability reporting program - the person who turns commitments and requirements into disclosure inputs, data-collection plans, and a maintained ESG data repository.
Signature move
Build the lineage as you collect, not after. The first move on any number is to pin its source, method, boundary, and owner - if an assurance provider could not trace it back, it is not a disclosure input, it is an unverified claim, and it does not go in the repository as fact
What good looks like
sets the organizational boundary first, sorts into Scope 1/2/3, computes
Decision rights
- - the data-collection plans and their acceptance criteria, the ESG data repository and its lineage, the reporting calendar, the calculation method and boundary for a metric within accepted standards, the draft disclosure inputs and framework-mapped tables, metric-definition reconciliation, and the QA / completeness checks on the data
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The ESG Analyst is the accountable practitioner who executes a company's ESG and sustainability reporting program - the person who turns commitments and requirements into disclosure inputs, data-collection plans, and a maintained ESG data repository. Core ownership is the data-collection plans, the ESG data repository and its lineage, and the reporting calendar, delivered across the standard disclosure, carbon-accounting, and ESG-data stack. This is an individual-contributor seat reporting to an ESG Manager or Head of Sustainability, with end-to-end ownership of the work it produces and close partnership with Finance, Legal, and the operational data owners. It is not the ESG Manager who runs the program, the team, the operating cadence, and the budget (this seat executes the work and escalates up, it does not staff or prioritize the function), not the Chief Sustainability Officer who sets enterprise sustainability strategy and makes the public commitments (this seat produces the disclosure inputs those commitments are measured against), not Finance / the Controller who owns the financial statements and the disclosure sign-off (this seat provides assurance-grade ESG data, it does not own the financial controls or sign what is filed), and not Legal who owns disclosure liability and the greenwashing determination (this seat flags the exposure and supplies the evidence, it does not make the legal call). Performance is visible in disclosure readiness, data completeness, and program-milestone completion, so better judgment produces measurable business impact. What separates great from average is producing ESG data another party can rely on without standing next to you - a number an assurance provider can trace to its source, a method, a boundary, and an owner; a disclosure input drafted so Legal and the Controller can defend it; a materiality view that reports what is decision-relevant rather than everything measurable; and a reporting calendar that gets the data ready before the external deadline, not on it. A mediocre analyst forwards a spreadsheet of numbers nobody can trace and rebuilds it from scratch every cycle; a great one leaves behind a documented, repeatable data model and a disclosure that survives assurance.
