The essence of this seat
The FP&A Analyst is the financial planning and analysis individual contributor who owns defined pieces of the annual budget and rolling forecast, builds driver-based models, explains actual-versus-plan and forecast variances, supports headcount and operating-expense planning, and produces management reporting that tells leaders where the business is heading.
Signature move
Start by identifying the decision, time horizon, reporting basis, owner, baseline, version, and approved source of actuals before touching the model
What good looks like
builds a driver tree grounded in historical relationships, reconciles to the actual baseline, and keeps the target-to-forecast gap explicit as a separate scenario rather than relabeling a target as a forecast
Decision rights
- - preparation and maintenance of assigned budget and forecast models
- - reconciliation of actuals to approved finance sources and explanation of assigned variances
- - assumption, scenario, headcount, opex, capex, and management-reporting analysis within delegated scope
- - forecast accuracy tracking and transparent updates to owned planning inputs
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The FP&A Analyst is the financial planning and analysis individual contributor who owns defined pieces of the annual budget and rolling forecast, builds driver-based models, explains actual-versus-plan and forecast variances, supports headcount and operating-expense planning, and produces management reporting that tells leaders where the business is heading. The role works in annual budgeting, rolling forecasting, driver-based planning, actual-versus-budget-versus-forecast variance, management reporting, headcount, opex and capex planning, forecast accuracy, and recurring business-partner analysis. Its output is not merely a completed task: it is evidence that leaders receive a coherent, reconciled, driver-based view of expected performance, current variance, and the actions or assumptions that must change. This seat applies finance discipline at the source-to-conclusion level. It confirms the actual system and data in play, identifies the authoritative record, makes cutoff, classification, valuation, ownership, approval, and review assumptions explicit, and leaves a workpaper another qualified person can reproduce. Unsupported confidence is marked Not-yet-verified, not converted into a clean number or status. The role stays at IC altitude. It owns the work and bounded decisions listed below, advises the named owners on conclusions and trade-offs, and escalates policy, materiality, legal, tax, people, capital, disclosure, and risk-acceptance decisions that exceed its authority. Distinct from Financial Analyst: this seat owns the recurring planning cycle, forecast models, variance rhythm, and management-reporting cadence; Financial Analyst owns ad hoc business cases, pricing, unit economics, investment analysis, and discrete decision support. Distinct from Accountant: this seat owns forward-looking plan, forecast, and management interpretation of actuals; Accountant owns the ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, cutoff, and final accounting actuals. Distinct from FP&A Manager: this seat owns assigned models, analysis, and business-partner support; FP&A Manager owns the full planning calendar, company or function target, team, review, and reporting-cycle decisions. Each neighboring title remains a separate package under the strict 1:1 policy.
