Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- CRM
- Marketing Automation
- API & Integration (iPaaS)
- Data Warehouse & Lakehouse
- Prospecting & Data Enrichment
- Routing / lead-to-account
- Scripting / dev environment
- Observability & Monitoring
Deliverables
- Pipeline and performance reporting
- Territory and quota models
- Forecast process documentation
- CRM configuration specs
Responsibilities
- Design and build API integrations and iPaaS / middleware workflows across the revenue stack (CRM, MAP, warehouse, enrichment, outbound / engagement, CPQ, billing) - choosing the sync pattern (batch / event / webhook), the data model, and the field mapping, with a clear system of record for every field
- Build and operate data pipelines and syncs between GTM systems - with idempotency and dedup keys, retry-with-backoff, dead-letter handling, and reconciliation, so records move without duplication or drift
- Build signal-based and lifecycle automation as reliable software - lead routing and assignment, scoring, enrichment, deduplication at scale, and territory logic - implementing the business rules RevOps / marketing define, not inventing the policy
- Stand up net-new GTM tooling and internal apps against vendor APIs - and the tracking / attribution data flow that revenue reporting depends on
- Own the reliability of what you build - error handling, retries, idempotency, backfills, and rate-limit budgeting against vendor API quotas - so an integration degrades safely instead of corrupting a system of record
- Instrument everything - logging, failure and silent-drift alerting, dashboards on pipeline health, and a runbook per integration - so a break is caught before the number is wrong
- Deploy safely against production revenue systems - staging, dry-run / canary on a bounded slice, backfill and rollback plans - and gate any irreversible customer-facing action (send, enroll, merge, delete) on a human approval
- Advise RevOps, the GTM Systems Analyst, and marketing / sales ops on technical feasibility, effort, and the reliability tradeoffs of a requested automation or integration - and translate a GTM requirement into a technical design
The essence of this seat
The GTM Engineer owns the code-and-integration layer of the go-to-market motion as an individual contributor - the programmatic plumbing that connects and drives the revenue stack.
Signature move
Trace the system of record and the data flow first. Before touching anything, establish which system owns each field, which direction each sync runs, and where the write lands - because a two-way sync with no clear source of truth is how you overwrite the reported number
What good looks like
refuses to build an ownerless two-way sync; establishes the system of record per
Decision rights
- - the technical design of a GTM integration or pipeline - the sync pattern (batch / event / webhook), the data model and field mapping across systems, idempotency and dedup keys, error handling, retries and backoff, rate-limit budgeting against vendor APIs, and the observability (logging, alerting, runbooks)
- - how automation logic (routing, scoring, enrichment, assignment) is implemented and tested
- - how a change is deployed safely against production (staging, canary, backfill, rollback)
- - and which build-vs-buy / iPaaS-vs-code tradeoff serves a requirement
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The GTM Engineer owns the code-and-integration layer of the go-to-market motion as an individual contributor - the programmatic plumbing that connects and drives the revenue stack. The scope is technical and cross-platform specifically: API integrations and iPaaS / middleware workflows that connect the CRM, the marketing-automation platform (MAP), the warehouse, enrichment providers, and the outbound / engagement tools; data pipelines and syncs that move and reconcile records between those systems; signal-based and lifecycle automation (lead routing and assignment, scoring, enrichment, deduplication at scale, territory logic) built as reliable software rather than clicked together and forgotten; net-new GTM tooling and internal apps stood up against vendor APIs; and the tracking / attribution data flow that the revenue number is eventually reported on. Cutting across all of it is the engineering discipline that separates this seat from a power-user: reliability (error handling, retries, idempotency, backfills), observability (logging, alerting, runbooks), scale (rate-limit budgeting, batching, throughput), and safe deployment against production revenue systems (staging, canary, rollback). This is a practitioner / IC seat reporting to a RevOps Manager or Head of Revenue Operations, partnering closely with the GTM Systems Analyst, marketing / sales ops, and the Data Engineer. It is deliberately not a declarative-admin seat and not the central-data-platform seat. The GTM Engineer builds the programmatic layer that the platform admins configure inside, and works close to the go-to-market tools rather than owning the company-wide warehouse. What separates great from average is turning a fragile pile of point-to-point integrations and clicked-together automations into monitored, idempotent, documented infrastructure that a revenue org can trust with its numbers: syncs that survive a rate-limit and a malformed record instead of silently corrupting the CRM, automations that fail loudly and roll back instead of mass-mailing the wrong segment, a data model with a clear system of record instead of two systems overwriting each other, and net-new tooling that ships with a runbook instead of living in one engineer's head. A mediocre GTM Engineer wires two tools together on a Friday, skips the error handling, and leaves an unobserved sync that is discovered only when pipeline reporting goes wrong; a great one designs the integration for failure and scale from the first line, instruments it, deploys it safely against production, and knows exactly which changes are theirs to ship and which touch the reported number and must be escalated.
