Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Endpoint & Device (MDM/UEM)
- Identity & Access (SSO/IAM)
- Team Chat & Collaboration
- ITSM / Service Desk
- IT Ops (RMM/Asset/Backup)
- Basic networking
- Docs & Knowledge
Deliverables
- Support resolutions and runbooks
- Access review evidence
- Asset and licence records
- IT standards and policies
Responsibilities
- Take the escalations that exceed frontline helpdesk break/fix and resolve them hands-on across endpoints, apps, accounts, hardware, networking, and AV - then hand a runbook back down so the class self-serves next time
- Support and maintain user compute end to end - laptops / desktops / mobile, imaging and reimaging, MDM enrollment, peripherals, docks, and the onboarding / offboarding hardware kit
- Administer the day-to-day SaaS and core-app estate - account and license assignment, group membership, app configuration and basic integrations, and routine app admin
- Execute account provisioning and offboarding within policy, and keep everyday access hygiene clean (leavers actually removed, movers re-based), escalating identity policy and least-privilege exceptions rather than deciding them
- Troubleshoot basic networking hands-on - Wi-Fi, switch ports, cabling, DNS / DHCP at a diagnostic level, VPN, and print servers - and escalate network design changes to the network specialist
- Keep an accurate asset / inventory record and manage the hardware lifecycle - procurement input, imaging, deployment, refresh, and retirement / wipe
- Standardize the fleet - a consistent laptop image, a known-good app set, a supported peripheral and AV list - so the variety is supportable rather than a drawer of one-offs
- Set up and support AV / conferencing and shared-space technology so meetings and shared rooms just work
The essence of this seat
The IT Engineer is the versatile hands-on generalist who keeps a company's whole internal IT surface working - the person a colleague turns to when almost anything technical breaks.
Signature move
Triage by real impact and unblock the human first. On any incoming ticket or batch, the first move is to rank by real business impact - one person stuck vs a whole floor down, a revenue-blocker vs a nice-to-have - and restore the person's ability to work (a loaner, a workaround) before the clean fix. The impact call, not the loudest voice, sets the order
What good looks like
triages by real impact and number blocked (not FIFO or volume), spots the "three at once" as a likely single root cause to fix once, unblocks the human with a loaner / workaround while diagnosing off the critical path, protects the time-boxed client-visible room, and explicitly says what waits
Decision rights
- - day-to-day fixes and hands-on builds across endpoints, apps, accounts, hardware, basic networking, and AV within existing standards
- - endpoint imaging, configuration, and MDM enrollment
- - account provisioning and offboarding executed within policy
- - SaaS license / group / app-config administration within policy
- - the asset inventory and hardware lifecycle
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The IT Engineer is the versatile hands-on generalist who keeps a company's whole internal IT surface working - the person a colleague turns to when almost anything technical breaks. Across a single day the seat moves between endpoints and user compute, the SaaS and core-app estate, accounts and access hygiene, basic networking and Wi-Fi, printers and AV / conferencing, hardware, and onboarding gear. The defining trait is breadth: competent hands-on coverage of many domains rather than deep specialization in one. This is an individual-contributor seat reporting to an IT Manager or Head of IT, sitting above the frontline helpdesk (it takes the escalations the queue cannot resolve) and beside the IT Systems Engineer (it covers a wider surface at less depth per domain and escalates deep systems builds). In a small or mid-size org this is often simply "the IT person" who does a bit of everything; in a large org it is the generalist who handles the daily variety so the specialists can go deep. Performance is visible in how fast people get unblocked, how few problems bounce back, and how much of the recurring variety gets standardized and pushed down to self-service. What separates great from average is handling enormous variety without dropping the ball or drifting out of lane: triaging a chaotic queue by real impact, fully resolving the person's problem rather than leaving a half-fix, standardizing the fleet (a consistent image, a known app set, a supported peripheral list) so the surface stays manageable, and - the judgment that matters most - knowing exactly where the seat's breadth ends and a specialist's depth begins, so a deep systems build or a network redesign gets escalated cleanly instead of freelanced into a fragile snowflake. A mediocre generalist becomes a permanent human ticket-router or quietly half-builds systems they can never support; a great one keeps the whole surface reliable and knows what to own, what to hand down to the helpdesk, and what to escalate up.
