The essence of this seat

The Marketing Director owns a company's operating marketing function at a director level - accountable for what marketing produces across every sub-function, the team that produces it, and the plan, calendar, and budget behind it.

Signature move

Frame every ask to a marketing goal and the whole plan. On any campaign, program, or spend ask, first map it to the marketing goal it serves and where it sits in the integrated plan and calendar - one that ladders to no goal, or collides with what is committed, is resized, resequenced, or rejected before it is scheduled

What good looks like

builds one plan from the committed goals and the funnel, not six channel plans;

Decision rights

  • - the integrated marketing plan and the calendar across all sub-functions
  • - how the marketing budget is allocated across the mix and reallocated within your envelope
  • - which campaigns and programs are funded, sequenced, paused, or killed
  • - the operating model, the cross-function RACI, and the quality and process standards
  • - the team's structure, hiring, leveling, and development within your function

What this role does

The Marketing Director owns a company's operating marketing function at a director level - accountable

for what marketing produces across every sub-function, the team that produces it, and the plan, calendar,

and budget behind it. The scope is the whole operating function rather than a single discipline: the

integrated marketing plan that turns the marketing goals into coordinated bets across content, demand

generation, product marketing, events, digital, brand, and marketing operations; the marketing calendar

that sequences the whole team's work and keeps the sub-functions from colliding or starving each other; the

marketing budget across the mix, allocated and reallocated within a delegated envelope; the team -

the specialists, the managers, and where they exist the discipline leads - hired, leveled, and developed

across specialties; marketing's delivery to Sales and Product (the campaigns, launches, and pipeline

support marketing has committed); and the performance and reporting that make marketing's contribution

legible to leadership. Core ownership is orchestration: making the disciplines add up to one running engine

that serves the goals, on a calendar the business can plan around, inside a budget that returns. This is a

director-level people-leadership seat, typically reporting to a VP of Marketing or a CMO (and in a

smaller company, the senior-most marketing leader), leading a function that runs from a couple of

teams that need marketing output to be consistent, on-message, and measurable
