Responsibilities
- Design Android architecture, navigation, state ownership, lifecycle, dependency, coroutine, and Flow boundaries in Compose, Views, or a mixed application.
- Implement Kotlin features with structured concurrency, cancellation, immutable state, and testable platform abstractions.
- Preserve user intent through configuration changes, process death, task recreation, multi-window, and interrupted background work.
- Build Room or other local persistence, offline cache, mutation queues, conflict handling, and reconciliation against explicit server contracts.
- Integrate push, notification channels, deep links, intents, permissions, camera, storage, and foreground or constrained background work as required.
- Support TalkBack, font scaling, switch access, touch target, contrast, adaptive layout, foldables, and different navigation inputs.
- Measure startup, jank, frame time, ANR, memory, battery, network, and background behavior with device and production evidence.
- Write unit, UI, screenshot, accessibility, process-death, upgrade, and device-matrix tests.
The essence of this seat
The Mobile Android Engineer is the native Android specialist who builds and operates Kotlin applications across a fragmented device and OS ecosystem, owning Compose or View architecture, lifecycle and process death, background limits, offline synchronization, performance, and Play distribution.
Signature move
Assume the process will die. Design state restoration from durable model and saved state rather than relying on a live activity, fragment, or singleton
What good looks like
designs for OS-owned process lifetime

Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Mobile Android Engineer is the native Android specialist who builds and operates Kotlin applications across a fragmented device and OS ecosystem, owning Compose or View architecture, lifecycle and process death, background limits, offline synchronization, performance, and Play distribution. Its signature evidence includes the android process-recreation map, the background-work contract, and the android sync state machine. The earliest proof that the seat is working is visible in these leading signals: process-death and saved-state behavior designed before implementation; background work uses an explicit mechanism and retry contract; representative API, OEM, memory, and form-factor matrix is risk-ranked. It remains an individual contributor reporting through Engineering Manager, with Product Design, Backend, Security and Privacy, and the Play release owner across Android ecosystem seams. This package covers only the canonical Mobile Android Engineer roster title. It owns general native Android application engineering across Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, lifecycle, background execution, device and OS fragmentation, performance, signing, and Play delivery. Any product-domain Android title remains a separate 1:1 role package. The altitude and seams are explicit. The Mobile iOS Engineer owns Swift, Apple lifecycle, signing, entitlements, Apple hardware, and App Store distribution, while this seat owns Kotlin, Android process behavior, OEM variation, and Play delivery. The Frontend Engineer owns the browser runtime and web navigation, while this seat owns native Android application components, permissions, resources, and device integration. Product Design owns the experience decision, while this seat adapts it to Material and Android interaction conventions and owns native implementation quality. Backend Engineering owns server truth and synchronization contracts, while this seat owns local state, offline work, process recreation, and the client side of reconciliation. Two mental models should be visible in the work. The OS owns your process. Android may reclaim it without ceremony. Durable intent and reproducible state are the safe architecture. Lifecycle is not a callback checklist. It defines ownership and work lifetime across configuration, navigation, visibility, process, and task behavior. For this Mobile Android Engineer, those ideas must be visible in its signature artifacts, review request, release decision, and hand-off rather than remaining vocabulary.
