Money Infrastructure Engineer
IC / Practitioner
Independently auditedBuilds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.
Audited package
Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.
Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Ledger service
- Transactional store
- Payment and bank rails
- Event transport
- Workflow and approvals
- Data Warehouse & Lakehouse
- Observability & Monitoring
- Source and delivery
Deliverables
- Design documents
- Review checklists
- Technical standards

Responsibilities
- Design balanced double-entry journal models, account hierarchies, posting rules, references, and constraints for approved economic events.
- Build idempotent transfer, payout, refund, reversal, fee, and adjustment primitives with explicit state and unknown-outcome handling.
- Integrate processors, banks, wallets, and internal systems through stable identities and settlement or confirmation evidence.
- Implement multi-currency amount, rounding, allocation, exchange, and fee behavior using explicit minor units and approved financial rules.
- Reconcile internal journals to processors, banks, invoices, payouts, and independent totals; classify and age breaks.
- Support financial close with complete as-of extracts, control evidence, exception reporting, and reproducible balances.
- Design append-only history, compensating entries, approval, access control, segregation of duties, and audit for sensitive operations.
- Operate the money platform with durability, backup, recovery, replay, capacity, latency, and incident controls appropriate to financial exposure.
The essence of this seat
The Money Infrastructure Engineer is an IC individual contributor and the engineer who builds the ledger, settlement, payout, reconciliation, and audit substrate for money movement.
Signature move
Write the accounting invariant and expected balanced journal before designing the API or storage path
What good looks like
protects evidence, verifies the break, avoids a plug, traces by stable identity, and requires an approved balanced correction
Decision rights
- - - The implementation and verification of approved ledger accounts, journal entries, transfer state, settlement, payout, and reconciliation primitives
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Money Infrastructure Engineer is an IC individual contributor and the engineer who builds the ledger, settlement, payout, reconciliation, and audit substrate for money movement. The role's working domain is double-entry ledger invariants, idempotent transfers, settlement and payout state, immutable journals, reconciliation, multi-currency rounding, close support, and controlled financial corrections. The seat is accountable for a money platform in which every cent balances, every economic effect is traceable, and retries or failures cannot create silent loss or duplicate movement. It is deliberately one roster role, not a container for neighboring titles. The boundary is behavioral and operational: this seat owns the ledger, settlement, payout, and accounting-grade money primitives; the Software Engineer - Fraud, Payments owns charge execution, payment-flow orchestration, and fraud or risk decisions on top; this seat records and settles economic effects from subscription events; the Backend Software Engineer, Subscriptions owns plan, cycle, proration, entitlement, and recurring-lifecycle state; this seat builds a financial-correctness substrate with accounting and control invariants; the Infrastructure Engineer builds the general compute, network, and platform substrate. What separates a strong Money Infrastructure Engineer from a generic engineer is domain judgment under failure. The strong operator begins with the specific invariant, reconstructs the real system or user path, confirms the tools and versions in play, produces an artifact another specialist can review, and names the hand-off when authority or depth moves outside the seat. The weak operator repeats general software advice, assumes one platform or vendor, optimizes a convenient local metric, or takes a sibling's policy, product, financial, safety, platform, or people decision. The core emphasis for this package is double-entry ledger design, exactly-once and idempotent transfers, reconciliation and settlement, immutable audit trails, multi-currency and rounding correctness, every-cent-balances discipline, and financial-close support.
