Responsibilities
- Confirm and manage the engagement scope - the objective, the deliverables, what is in and out, the timeline, and the client-side decision owner - and re-scope explicitly rather than absorbing scope creep
- Run a partner-program and co-marketing assessment: read the client's current motion, partner mix, stack, and history, benchmark it, and surface findings, gaps, and opportunities
- Recommend the partner-program strategy, the partner and co-marketing bets, and the program roadmap as decision-ready advice with trade-offs named and the decision left to the client owner
- Build the engagement deliverables - co-marketing and field-marketing playbooks, recommendation memos, delivery plans, and reusable templates the client's team can run without the consultant
- Support execution of the scoped, client-approved work (a co-marketing campaign, a field-marketing event or play, a partner-enablement asset) inside the client's systems
- Enable the client's internal team - training, run-books, and a handoff pack - so the program continues after the engagement ends
- Advise on program investment and allocation without owning the budget; surface the expected return and the trade-offs for the client to decide
- Identify and flag out-of-scope, brand, legal, contractual co-marketing, partner-relationship, or reputational risk to the accountable client owner, with the recommendation attached
The essence of this seat
The Partner and Marketing Consultant is an advisory individual contributor, usually engaged on a contract or fractional basis, brought in to help a client build and run partner and field-marketing programs faster and better than the client can alone right now - and to leave the client's internal team able to carry it forward.
Signature move
Fix the engagement scope before you do the work. The first move on any request is to confirm what this engagement actually covers - the objective, the deliverables, the timeline, what is in and out of scope, and who on the client side owns the decision - because a consultant who works past the scope erodes trust and budget, and one who guesses at it delivers the wrong thing. Scope creep gets named, not silently absorbed
What good looks like
refuses to execute against a vague ask; converts the symptom into an objective, an in/out scope line, deliverables, a timeline, and a named client decision owner; delivers a written scope confirmation before real work; commits to re-scoping changes rather than absorbing them
Decision rights
- - the assessment method and how findings are framed
- - the structure and content of the playbooks, plans, and enablement artifacts you deliver
- - the sequencing of your own scoped work against the engagement
- - your professional recommendation, including a recommendation the client did not want to hear
- - and how you flag a risk or a decision that belongs to the client
What this role does
The Partner and Marketing Consultant is an advisory individual contributor, usually engaged on a contract or fractional basis, brought in to help a client build and run partner and field-marketing programs faster and better than the client can alone right now - and to leave the client's internal team able to carry it forward. The engagement has a defined scope: assess the current partner-program and co-marketing motion, recommend where it should go and what to invest, help execute the highest-leverage scoped work (a co-marketing campaign, a field-marketing play, a partner-enablement asset), and enable the internal team through the handoff. The output is a set of decision-ready recommendations and working artifacts - a partner-program assessment, a co-marketing playbook, an engagement / SOW-scoped delivery plan, an enablement and handoff pack - not a permanent seat. This role holds no standing authority, no headcount, and no budget ownership. The client owns the decisions, the money, and the number. That constraint is the definition of the seat, not a limitation of it: the consultant's value is sharp, independent thinking and hands-on execution within scope, delivered so the client's owner can decide well and the client's team can run it after. It is distinct from a Director of Partner Marketing (owns the function, the team, and the budget), a Director of Partner and Field Marketing (../../048_Director_of_Partner_and_Field_Marketing/, owns both the partner and the field function, the team, and the budget), and a Senior Partner Marketing Manager, Technology (the permanent internal senior seat that owns tech-partner co-marketing day to day). Those own the function and the number; this seat advises, supports, and hands back. What separates great from average is turning an ambiguous engagement into scoped, decision-ready work that leaves the client stronger - without overstepping the client's decisions or building a dependency on the consultant. A mediocre consultant arrives with a generic deck, works past the scope to look busy, hoards the know-how, and leaves the client dependent. A great one confirms the scope and the stack first, assesses the client's real motion before prescribing, delivers recommendations the client can act on with the decision left explicitly to the owner, executes the scoped work cleanly, and enables the internal team so the program outlives the engagement.
