Deliverables

Responsibilities

  • Lead the hardest and most ambiguous partnership bets end to end - the new-motion partnership nobody has run before, the flagship alliance too consequential for a base seat, the cross-team initiative that needs a single owner - and de-risk each into a motion the team can repeat
  • Set the working pattern the other partner managers follow: the joint-business-planning standard, the co-sell / co-market play, the deal-registration-quality bar, and the new-partnership-creation playbook - proven by running it first, then documented so a peer can run it without you
  • Coach and unblock peer partner managers by influence - model the standard, remove the blocker on a stuck partnership, and pair on a hard joint plan or executive business review - without conducting their reviews, setting their goals, or managing them
  • Orchestrate the cross-functional partnership motion across sales, marketing, product, and partner operations - align scope, dependencies, and decision dates on the ambiguous new bet before the team commits
  • Own the joint business plan, joint solution positioning, and executive business reviews for the flagship partnerships you personally carry, kept honest in the CRM and the alliance scorecards
  • Hold the partner-sourced-versus-partner-influenced line on your own book and set the attribution standard for the team, so the aggregate number survives a sales leader's challenge
  • Identify partner-commitment, channel-conflict, integration-readiness, or new-motion-viability risk early, and escalate the program, budget, headcount, or contract decision it implies up to the manager or director - decision-ready, with a recommendation
  • Improve the partnerships operating model - remove duplicate steps across the two companies, clarify decision rights, and automate the repeatable planning and reporting work - as a team standard, not a personal habit

The essence of this seat

The Partnerships Lead is the player-coach of a partnerships team - the senior individual contributor who personally carries the hardest, highest-stakes, most ambiguous partnership bets, sets the working pattern (the joint-business-planning standard, the co-sell play, the new-motion playbook) that the other partner managers follow, and coaches and unblocks those peers - all by influence rather than authority.

Signature move

De-risk before you commit finite capacity. On any new-motion or ambiguous bet, name the cheapest hypothesis that proves the motion and the transition risks to surface before launch - so an unproven bet becomes a test, not a heroic one-off

What good looks like

carries the ambiguous bet end to end but runs it as a cheap-proof-first experiment (thesis, acceptance criteria, transition risk named before committing) rather than a heroic one-off; leaves behind a documented repeatable motion the team can run; treats a cheap failure as a legitimate, capacity-protecting result - not a personal logo to hoard

Decision rights

  • - the joint business plan, positioning, co-sell execution, and executive-business-review cadence for the flagship partnerships you personally carry
  • - the working pattern the team follows (the joint-planning standard, the co-sell / co-market play, the deal-reg-quality bar, the new-partnership-creation playbook)
  • - the technical / craft approach to the hardest and most ambiguous bet
  • - the attribution standard and the sourced-versus-influenced line on your book
  • - and how you coach, model, and unblock peers

What this role does

The Partnerships Lead is the player-coach of a partnerships team - the senior individual contributor who personally carries the hardest, highest-stakes, most ambiguous partnership bets, sets the working pattern (the joint-business-planning standard, the co-sell play, the new-motion playbook) that the other partner managers follow, and coaches and unblocks those peers - all by influence rather than authority. Core ownership is the hardest end-to-end partnership work plus the pattern others copy: the new-motion bet nobody has run before, the flagship alliance too consequential to hand to a base seat, the cross-team initiative that needs someone to hold it together, and the repeatable playbook that lets a peer produce without the Lead in the room. This is explicitly a senior-IC seat with no formal reports: it reports up to a Partnerships Manager or a Director of Partnerships, works shoulder to shoulder with peer partner managers (whom it mentors but does not manage), and partners with sales, marketing, product, and the partner's own team. It is not a Partnerships Manager, who is the people manager - owns hiring, performance, the program budget, and MDF allocation, and decides team matters (this Lead has none of those and escalates them up); not a Director of Partnerships, who owns the whole team, the portfolio, and the strategy; not an Alliance Manager, the base individual contributor who executes a defined book of named alliances to a standard (this Lead takes the bets that exceed that seat and sets the standard the base seat builds to); and not a Senior Alliance Manager, who carries depth and tenure on a large named-alliance book (this Lead drives new partnership creation and the program-wide motion, and coaches, rather than owning one deep book). Performance is visible in whether the hard bets pay off, whether the pattern the Lead sets gets adopted, and whether the peers around them level up - so better judgment compounds across the whole team, not one book. What separates great from average at this altitude is being a multiplier without any of the authority a manager has to lean on: taking the ambiguous bet and de-risking it into a motion the team can repeat, setting a playbook that is adopted because it visibly works when the Lead runs it first (not because anyone was told to use it), unblocking a peer's stuck partnership instead of taking it over, holding a hard partner-sourced-versus-influenced line that protects the whole team's credibility, and escalating the program calls - budget, headcount, a partner contract - up to the manager or director with a recommendation attached. A mediocre Lead becomes a lone super-IC who hoards the marquee partners and helps no one; a great one turns the hardest problem into a pattern the team owns and leaves the peers around them better than they found them.
