Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 2-8 partner-facing ICs - assign the partner book / territory, set the quality bar for joint plans and partner business reviews, and make workload and coverage trade-offs visible before commitments slip
  • Design and run the partner program: partner-recruitment strategy, tiering, onboarding, co-sell and co-market motions, and the deal-registration quality standard the team works to
  • Allocate the program's MDF and budget line across partners and campaigns, and own the business case, sequence, and adoption plan for the PRM and CRM the team runs on
  • Own the team's partner-sourced pipeline, partner engagement, and deal-registration quality - rebalance work, diagnose recurring failure modes, and explain the team's performance to partners and up to the Director
  • Hire, onboard, coach, and performance-manage the partner-facing ICs against observable standards for joint plans, co-sell execution, sourced pipeline, and CRM hygiene
  • Convert the Director's partnerships strategy and the year's targets into scoped, sequenced work the team can execute, with named owners, review points, and acceptance criteria
  • Align partners, sales, and marketing on scope, dependencies, and decision dates before the team commits to a cross-functional co-sell or co-market motion
  • Run the program-level operating cadence - team stand-ups, book reviews, and a partner-business-review calendar - and coach each IC to run their own reviews rather than running them for them

The essence of this seat

The Partnerships Manager is the first management tier of a partnerships organization: the front-line people manager who runs a partnerships sub-team and its program day to day.

Signature move

Lead through the program, not the marquee partner. The first move on any request is to ask whether this is program / team work or an IC's carry - the default is to design the repeatable motion and coach the book's owner, carrying a partner directly only to model the bar or through a genuine gap

What good looks like

builds repeatable program mechanics (ideal-partner profile, tiers, onboarding, named co-sell motions, deal-reg standard) plus a fit-and-stretch book assignment - not a directive to work logos; frames the deliverable as a program a new hire could run, explicitly distinguishing program-building from carrying relationships personally

Decision rights

  • - the partner program design (recruitment profile, tiers, onboarding, co-sell / co-market motions, deal-reg quality standard), MDF and budget allocation within the program's approved envelope, partner book / territory assignment across the team, the joint-plan and EBR quality bar, hiring and leveling within your team, 1:1 and development plans, the team's operating cadence, PRM / CRM hygiene standards for the program, and which partners the program invests in, tiers, or lets go dormant within its mandate

What this role does

The Partnerships Manager is the first management tier of a partnerships organization: the front-line people manager who runs a partnerships sub-team and its program day to day. They lead a small team of partner-facing individual contributors (alliance managers, channel or partner managers, sometimes a partner engineer), design the partner program the team executes - who to recruit, the co-sell and co-market motions, onboarding, tiers, deal-registration quality - and allocate the MDF and budget line the program is given. This is the layer where a partnerships strategy becomes a working team producing partner-sourced pipeline. The altitude is precise, and it is what makes this role distinct. Above the Manager sits a Director of Partnerships (who runs the whole partnerships team and portfolio, sets the strategy, and owns the total budget and headcount), and above that a VP of Strategic Partnerships (who owns the function and its strategy); the Manager reports up to the Director and escalates to them. Below the Manager are the ICs the Manager leads - an Alliance Manager who carries a book of named alliances, a Channel or Partner Manager, a Partner Engineer where the program has one - whose work the Manager plans, assigns, coaches, and grows, but does not do for them. Beside the Manager, a Partnerships Lead runs a similar remit as a senior-IC player-coach with no formal reports; this seat has formal reports and owns hiring, the book assignments, and the program's MDF. The Manager does not own the whole portfolio, set the function's strategy, or approve the total budget - those live a tier up. What separates great from average is turning a partner strategy into a team that produces sourced pipeline, without becoming a super-IC who hoards the biggest partners. A mediocre Partnerships Manager keeps the marquee alliances for themselves, relays tasks to the rest, and reports activity. A great one designs a program with repeatable motions, assigns the book so every IC can win, coaches partner managers to run their own joint plans and business reviews, allocates finite MDF where joint value is real, holds the sourced-versus-influenced line across the whole team's number, and escalates the calls above their line - budget beyond the envelope, headcount, a partner contract - with a recommendation attached.
