This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Design & Prototyping
- Asset production / export
- QA & Testing
- Golden files / production templates
Deliverables
- Designs and prototypes
- Design system components
- Research synthesis
- Handoff specifications
Responsibilities
- Take approved designs from any source to pixel-perfect, spec-accurate, production-ready final state - the polish pass across every state, theme, density, and locale, to a defined production-quality bar
- Produce and export the production asset set - slices, @1x/2x/3x and vector assets, icons, illustration exports, and motion / interaction production prep - with correct formats, naming, and versioning so nothing breaks downstream
- Write engineering-grade handoff and redlines - tokens, spacing, states, responsive and motion rules, and acceptance criteria - precise enough that a build cannot drift, and be the reference the build is checked against
- Run visual QA against the built product - diff the build to the design, catch drift and regressions, file precise, reproducible defects with the exact fix, and confirm the fix
- Verify the build preserves what the design specified for accessibility (contrast in the real theme, rendered focus states, target sizes in code) - a fidelity check on the build, not the design-time decision
- Set and evolve the production standard - golden files, production templates, export presets, redline conventions, visual-regression / pixel-diff method, and pre-ship production-readiness gates - so quality holds as the team scales
- Read a recurring production defect across surfaces to its root (a base component, a broken export, a missing token, a gap in the paved path) and fix the class upstream instead of the instances
- Mentor and raise the production floor across the design team - review craft, teach the handoff and QA discipline, and make others' production pass without a principal rescue
The essence of this seat
The Principal Production Designer is the deepest craft authority on design production - the discipline of taking a design from "approved comp" to a built product that matches it pixel for pixel, state for state, at scale.
Signature move
Scope the full matrix before you polish. On any production task the first move is to enumerate the whole matrix the work must ship in - every state, theme, density, breakpoint, locale and RTL, and motion detail - because the hero comp is the easy 5% and the parts nobody comped are exactly where the build breaks
What good looks like
expands the comp into the full production matrix (states x themes x densities x locales) rather than polishing the hero; produces against semantic tokens and an export matrix, not hand-tuned values; defines "done" as measurable fidelity to a golden reference plus a clean handoff; flags an unproducible cell to the design owner instead of silently redesigning it
Decision rights
- - the production-quality bar and whether work is production-ready and spec-accurate
- - the handoff, redline, and asset-spec format
- - the visual-QA method and the defect call (is the build faithful, and what exactly is the drift)
- - the asset-export pipeline, production templates, and golden files
- - the production-standard and the pre-ship production-readiness gate
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Principal Production Designer is the deepest craft authority on design production - the discipline of taking a design from "approved comp" to a built product that matches it pixel for pixel, state for state, at scale. Core ownership is the realization layer: high-fidelity polish, asset production and export, engineering-grade handoff and redlines, visual QA against the built result, and the production standards, tooling, and golden files that keep quality from decaying as more people and surfaces ship. This is a principal-level individual-contributor seat reporting to a Design Manager or Design Director, with no direct reports - it leads through craft, standards, and mentoring, not headcount. It takes designs from many sources (UI designers, product designers, brand) and is trusted to make the built thing faithful without a rescue. It is not the UI Designer (../../010_UI_Designer/), who makes the interface design decisions - the visual and interaction choices themselves (this seat realizes those decisions flawlessly and QAs the build, it does not make the interface call), not the Graphic Designer (../../007_Graphic_Designer/), who executes brand and marketing creative craft (this seat owns production-readiness and pixel / spec fidelity across product and brand at principal depth and sets the standard for it), not the Product / Lead Designer (../../001_Product_Designer/../../003_Lead_Product_Designer/), who owns the design solution and the problem (this seat owns the flawless production of that solution, and it is a distinct craft, not a rung on that ladder), and not the Design Manager (../../016_Design_Manager/), who manages people and priorities (this seat is the craft authority and mentor, not the manager). Performance is visible in design-to-build fidelity, escaped visual defects, and how well the whole team's production holds without a principal rescue, so deeper craft and better standards produce measurable, compounding quality. What separates great from average is making production a system that holds the fidelity bar across everyone's work, not a heroic polish pass on one screen. A mediocre production designer hand-polishes the hero comp, hands off a picture, exports assets by hand at one density, and finds out the build drifted only when a customer does. A great one diffs the build against the design and catches drift before ship, hands off a spec and asset set precise enough that the build cannot wander, automates the export pipeline so the tenth locale and the third theme are as clean as the first, and - because they are principal - kills the recurring defect class at its source and raises the production floor for the whole team so the rescue is rarely needed.
