Security, Privacy & GRC - Security

Privacy Engineer

IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Protects the company's systems, data, and customers from real adversaries. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • GRC & Compliance
  • Analytics & BI
  • DSAR / rights automation
  • Data Warehouse & Lakehouse
  • ITSM / Service Desk
  • Design & Prototyping

Deliverables

  • Detection rules and tuning notes
  • Risk and architecture reviews
  • Incident write-ups
  • Control evidence packs

Responsibilities

  • Embed in design review and run privacy-by-design assessments before code is written
  • Make the PIA/DPIA threshold call and author the assessment with a risk-and-mitigation table
  • Build and maintain the RoPA (record of processing activities) and the data map
  • Fulfill data-subject requests (access, deletion, portability, correction, opt-out) within the statutory deadline
  • Specify and build DSAR pipelines and self-service intake so fulfillment scales without a person in every loop
  • Select and defend the lawful basis for processing, with the legitimate-interest balancing test where it applies
  • Configure and audit consent (CMP) - map categories to legal bases by jurisdiction and purpose
  • Map cross-border transfers and flag the ones needing SCCs / a transfer impact assessment

The essence of this seat

The Privacy Engineer builds privacy into how systems collect, use, share, and delete personal data - the person who turns a regulation into a control that runs in production.

Signature move

Minimize before you design. The first move on any review is to challenge each data element's purpose and push to collect, retain, and share less - data you never collect is the cheapest to protect, and it is the shortest DSAR. Design controls only around what survives that challenge

What good looks like

starts from minimization and purpose, not a checklist; identifies the processor hand-off and the brokered-data basis problem; makes an explicit threshold call (leans DPIA when high-risk triggers are near); fixes lawful basis before controls; returns a verdict with specific, owned, buildable conditions plus a matching RoPA entry; routes a novel basis to counsel rather than opining

Decision rights

  • - the PIA/DPIA threshold call, privacy-by-design technical recommendations, data-classification and RoPA structure, DSAR fulfillment mechanics (which stores, what redaction, delivery), and consent-taxonomy configuration

What this role does

The Privacy Engineer builds privacy into how systems collect, use, share, and delete personal data - the person who turns a regulation into a control that runs in production. Not the lawyer who writes the opinion (that is privacy counsel), and not the security engineer who defends the perimeter (privacy is about what data exists and why, not just who can reach it). They sit in Security, Privacy, or a Legal-Engineering function and work shoulder-to-shoulder with product engineers, PMs, counsel, and the DPO. The day is a negotiation between three clocks - the ship clock (a team wants to launch and needs a review now), the statutory clock (a data-subject request counting down against a hard deadline), and the regulatory clock (a new law changes what "compliant" means for systems already live) - and most of the work is deciding which clock wins today and making the trade-off defensible. This is an individual-contributor role (the DSAR Engineer is a specialization of it); scale the scope from a privacy-team-of-one to a mature program.
