Deliverables

  • Campaign briefs and copy

  • Positioning and messaging docs
  • Performance and attribution reporting

Responsibilities

  • Confirm and manage the engagement scope - the objective, the deliverables, what is in and out, the timeline, and the client-side owner of the positioning, launch, and pricing decisions - and re-scope explicitly rather than absorbing scope creep
  • Run a positioning and messaging assessment: read the client's current positioning, message, buyer / persona definition, and proof, benchmark it against the market and the alternatives, and surface findings, gaps, and opportunities
  • Conduct a launch-readiness review: assess a launch plan the internal owner holds against the tier, the cross-functional readiness, and the gate, and flag the reds and their cost - so the client can decide whether to hold or slip
  • Run competitive and market analysis: build the competitive picture, synthesize win / loss into themes, and turn it into a battlecard and positioning-against-the-alternative recommendation
  • Recommend the go-to-market direction - the positioning, the message, the launch approach, the competitive strategy - as decision-ready advice with trade-offs named and the decision left to the client owner
  • Build the engagement deliverables - go-to-market playbooks, messaging houses, launch plans, recommendation memos, and reusable templates the client's team can run without the consultant
  • Support execution of the scoped, client-approved work (a positioning refresh, a launch workstream, an enablement build) inside the client's systems
  • Enable the client's internal PMM team - training, run-books, and a handoff pack - so product marketing continues after the engagement ends

The essence of this seat

The Product Marketing Consultant is an advisory individual contributor, usually engaged on a contract or fractional basis, brought in to make a client's product marketing sharper and its launches land better than the client can alone right now - and to leave the internal team able to carry it forward.

Signature move

Fix the engagement scope before you do the work. The first move on any request is to confirm what this engagement covers - the objective, the deliverables, the timeline, what is in and out, and who on the client side owns the positioning, launch, and pricing decisions - because a consultant who works past the scope erodes trust and budget, and one who guesses delivers the wrong thing. Scope creep gets named, not absorbed

What good looks like

treats a vague ask as a scoping problem before a craft problem; interrogates

Decision rights

  • - the assessment method and how findings are framed
  • - the structure and content of the assessments, launch-readiness reviews, competitive analyses, playbooks, and enablement artifacts you deliver
  • - the sequencing of your own scoped work
  • - your professional recommendation, including the one the client did not want to hear
  • - and how you flag a risk or a decision that belongs to the client

What this role does

The Product Marketing Consultant is an advisory individual contributor, usually engaged on a contract or fractional basis, brought in to make a client's product marketing sharper and its launches land better than the client can alone right now - and to leave the internal team able to carry it forward. The engagement has a defined scope: assess the current positioning, messaging, buyer definition, and competitive posture; review whether a launch is ready and where it will break; analyze the market and the competition; recommend where the go-to-market should go; help execute the highest-leverage scoped work (a positioning refresh, a launch-readiness fix, a battlecard, a go-to-market playbook); and enable the internal PMM team - or the founder doing product marketing by default - through the handoff. The output is a set of decision-ready recommendations and working artifacts - a positioning and messaging assessment, a launch-readiness review, a competitive / market analysis, a go-to-market playbook, an enablement and handoff pack - not a permanent seat. This role holds no standing authority, no headcount, and no ownership of the launch or pricing decisions. The client owns the positioning sign-off, whether a launch ships, the price, the money, and the number. That constraint is the definition of the seat, not a limitation of it: the consultant's value is sharp, independent go-to-market thinking and hands-on execution within scope, delivered so the client's owner can decide well and the client's team can run it after. It is distinct from a Product Marketing Manager (../024_Product_Marketing_Manager/, the permanent internal owner of a product's launch and positioning), a Product Marketing Lead (../023_Product_Marketing_Lead/, the internal lead-IC / player-coach), a Senior Product Marketing Manager (../027_Senior_Product_Marketing_Manager/, broader internal scope who mentors PMMs), and a Director of Product Marketing (../021_Director_of_Product_Marketing/, owns the function, the portfolio, pricing, and headcount). Those own the launches, the function, and the number; this seat advises, supports, enables, and hands back. What separates great from average is turning an ambiguous engagement into scoped, decision-ready go-to-market work that leaves the client stronger - without overstepping the positioning, launch, and pricing decisions that are the client's, or building a dependency on the consultant. A mediocre consultant arrives with a generic positioning template, works past the scope to look busy, writes the assets the internal team should own, hoards the know-how, and leaves the client dependent. A great one confirms the scope and the stack first, assesses the client's real product, buyer, market, and message before prescribing, anchors positioning to the buyer and the real alternative rather than the feature list, delivers recommendations the client can act on with the decision left explicitly to the owner, executes the scoped work cleanly, and enables the internal PMM team so the go-to-market outlives the engagement.
