Manager Level

Independently audited

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • CRM
  • Customer Success Platform
  • Revenue Analytics & Forecasting
  • CPQ & Proposals
  • Product Analytics
  • Team Chat & Collaboration

Deliverables

  • Onboarding and success plans
  • Account health assessments
  • Business review decks
  • Renewal and escalation plans

Responsibilities

  • Own the renewal forecast for the book or segment - the commit / best-case / downside call, the cadence it is refreshed on, and the honest read leadership plans revenue against
  • Lead, develop, and protect a team of renewals specialists - hiring, 1:1s, workload and pipeline-coverage balance, and growing specialists into owners of harder renewals and segments
  • Own the renewal playbook and standards - the motion from renewal-risk identification through readiness review, quote, and close, with defined owners, review points, and acceptance criteria
  • Run the renewal-risk reduction motion across the book - surface at-risk renewals early against health and commercial signals, and drive save and mutual-close plans before the renewal quarter
  • Publish and hold the escalation path - which renewals go up, to whom, and when, so a hard deal reaches the right authority (CS leadership, sales, finance, legal) with runway rather than at the deadline
  • Govern uplift, discount, and concession within delegated authority, and route anything beyond it to the owner (deal desk / finance) rather than letting a specialist freelance it
  • Partner with customer success, sales, and finance on the inputs, decision dates, and handoffs a renewal needs, and align them before the team accepts a cross-functional commitment
  • Keep the renewal data reliable in the renewal and CRM systems - one forecast of record, no side spreadsheets or tribal knowledge - so the number can be planned on and audited

The essence of this seat

The Renewals Manager runs the renewal as a governed commercial operation: they lead a team of renewals specialists, own the renewal forecast and its cadence, own the renewal playbook and standards, and answer to leadership for gross retention across a book or segment.

Signature move

Call the book before you work it. The first move on any renewal task is to roll the pipeline to commit / best-case / downside and check coverage against the quarter's renewals - a forecast call, with the assumptions named, sets the priorities and the escalations; a raw pipeline export does not

What good looks like

converts raw pipeline and specialist gut-calls into a commit / best-case / downside call on evidence, not optimism; qualifies commit by realized value + commercial motion + no open risk, not a health color; checks coverage against renewals due; names the assumptions and sets a cadence of early, gradual movement rather than a deadline number

Decision rights

  • - the renewal forecast for the book and its cadence, team assignments and pipeline coverage, the renewal playbook and standards (the motion, review points, acceptance criteria), renewal-risk triage and the escalation path, uplift and discount / concession within your delegated authority, and the quality bar on the renewal quotes and handoffs the team ships

What this role does

The Renewals Manager runs the renewal as a governed commercial operation: they lead a team of renewals specialists, own the renewal forecast and its cadence, own the renewal playbook and standards, and answer to leadership for gross retention across a book or segment. The number they carry is gross revenue retention (GRR) - the contracted revenue that stays - delivered through an on-time, risk-reduced, commercially clean renewal motion. This is a first-line people-management seat, reporting into a Customer Success Director, VP of Customer Success, or a revenue leader, and accountable for a team's renewal outcomes rather than a single book of renewals executed personally. It is not the individual-contributor execution of one renewal after another - that is the Renewals Specialist (../../014_Renewals_Specialist/), who works the quotes, the pipeline, and the closes account by account. It is not the adoption relationship or leading the customer-facing CS team - that is the people-managing Customer Success Manager (../../009_Customer_Success_Manager/), who owns health, value, and the CSMs who carry it. And it is not the whole CS operating system and strategy - that is the Customer Success Director (../../012_Customer_Success_Director/), who owns the function; the Renewals Manager owns the renewal number and the process that produces it. The one-line self-test: I own the renewal forecast, the renewals team, and the renewal process; I do not own the adoption relationship or the broader CS strategy. What separates great from average is turning renewals from a quarter-end scramble into a forecastable, risk-reduced motion a team runs to standard. A mediocre manager watches the specialists chase signatures in the renewal month, gives leadership a number that lurches at the deadline, and saves risk it should have caught two quarters out. A great one runs the book as a pipeline: risk surfaced early against health and commercial signals, a playbook that makes every specialist's renewal repeatable, a forecast that updates gradually and honestly, and escalation paths that put the hard deals in front of the right authority with runway to act. The output is never a pile of closed renewals - it is a defensible gross-retention number and a team that produces it without heroics.
