Security, Privacy & GRC - Security
Security Engineer
IC / Practitioner
Independently auditedProtects the company's systems, data, and customers from real adversaries. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.
Audited package
Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.
Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Endpoint & Device (MDM/UEM)
- Observability & Monitoring
- Vulnerability & Cloud Posture
- Firewall / network
- Identity & Access (SSO/IAM)
- Cloud Infrastructure & IaC
- Web / app protection
- ITSM / Service Desk
Deliverables
- Detection rules and tuning notes
- Risk and architecture reviews
- Incident write-ups
- Control evidence packs
Responsibilities
- Deploy, configure, and tune security tooling (EDR, SIEM, WAF, DLP, email security) so it lands trusted, not just installed
- Harden cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure) against CIS benchmarks and remediate findings as scripts or IaC
- Review and clean up firewall rules and network segmentation; enforce least privilege
- Harden infrastructure (Linux, Windows, containers, Kubernetes) to CIS/STIG baselines and detect drift
- Support identity and access - SSO/MFA configuration, access reviews, privilege-escalation cleanup
- Write security automation (Python/Bash/PowerShell) that removes manual toil - collection, enrichment, compliance checks
- Build and maintain the paved-road / IaC security modules teams deploy against
- Handle security events that don't rise to a full incident, and hand tuned signal to the SOC
The essence of this seat
The Security Engineer builds, deploys, hardens, and automates the security infrastructure that protects the organization.
Signature move
Harden to a named baseline, then prove it. Before changing a system, pin which standard it is measured against - CIS, STIG, NIST, a provider benchmark - and how you will evidence conformance with a scan. Hardening with no named baseline and no proof is opinion, not a control
What good looks like
refuses the default-policy push; scoped detect-mode rollout to learn the environment first, then tunes exclusions/sensitivity/response before widening; proves coverage and agrees thresholds with the SOC so the output is trusted; treats "installed" as not-done and "tuned + covered + trusted" as done
Decision rights
- - tool configuration and tuning, hardening baselines, firewall/segmentation rule changes within policy, automation you build, and how controls are deployed and validated
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Security Engineer builds, deploys, hardens, and automates the security infrastructure that protects the organization. They are the build-and-run generalist of the security team - comfortable across endpoint, network, cloud, identity, and tooling - distinct from the Security Architect (who decides what to build) and the Security Analyst (who watches the alerts). Specialized roles (AppSec, GRC, Detection, IR) go deep in one domain; the Security Engineer covers the breadth so the stack works as one defense-in-depth system and the seams between specialties don't become blind spots. The day is hands-on and measured on coverage, gaps closed, and toil removed through automation. At any size the job is the same shape; only the number of tools and assets changes. The breadth-over-depth generalist / security-team-of-one - whole-surface coverage spanning AppSec, detection, vuln management, and GRC - is the distinct package 037_Information_Security_Engineer_Generalist/; this role owns the hands-on build-and-run of the controls stack.
