Intern
Independently auditedProtects the company's systems, data, and customers from real adversaries. Works on well-scoped, supervised pieces of real work, reviewed before anything ships.
Audited package
Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.
Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Threat Detection (SIEM/EDR/SOAR)
- Scripting / automation
- Vuln / cloud security
- Version Control & Code Review
- Demo & POC Tooling
Deliverables
- Detection rules and tuning notes
- Risk and architecture reviews
- Incident write-ups
- Control evidence packs
Responsibilities
- Assist security engineers with well-scoped build tasks - draft and tune detection rules, write small automation scripts, apply secure-config changes - always in a sandbox / non-prod first and reviewed before anything ships
- Reproduce and verify: show that a detection or script works, and how you know, before handing it back
- Help with vulnerability and cloud-security basics under guidance - run scans, triage output, apply baseline hardening
- Follow the team's patterns for version control, code review, and infrastructure-as-code
- Keep clear learning notes and write documentation / runbooks for the work you touch
- Surface confusion and any real security signal early; escalate anything production-touching or beyond the scope your mentor set
- Prepare good questions for your mentor and grow toward owning small, recurring tasks with lighter review
The essence of this seat
The Security Engineering Intern is an early-career, supervised member of the security engineering team - learning to build and operate security controls by taking well-scoped pieces of real work: writing and tuning detections, automating repetitive security tasks, assisting with vulnerability and cloud-security basics, applying secure-config baselines, and documenting what they do.
Signature move
Confirm the scope and the safe environment before you start. The first move on any task is to restate what your mentor actually scoped and confirm which environment is non-prod / sandbox - if the scope is unclear or the work is production-touching, that is a question to ask, not a task to begin
What good looks like
produces detection logic against real field names plus the four framing pieces (catches / misses / false-positive risk / non-prod test evidence), surfaces its own risks rather than hiding them, treats the rule as a defensible claim not a lucky hit, and keeps the ship decision with the mentor
Decision rights
- - how you approach a well-scoped assigned task, your own learning notes, and drafts you bring for review
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Security Engineering Intern is an early-career, supervised member of the security engineering team - learning to build and operate security controls by taking well-scoped pieces of real work: writing and tuning detections, automating repetitive security tasks, assisting with vulnerability and cloud-security basics, applying secure-config baselines, and documenting what they do. This is an individual-contributor / intern role, reporting to a mentor or security engineering manager, and accountable for reliable execution on defined tasks - not for owning the program. It is distinct from the IT Security Engineering Intern, who secures the corporate IT environment (endpoints, identity, email); this intern leans toward security-engineering build tasks on the security / detection / product-security team. What separates a great intern from an average one is judgment growth and reliability: asking good questions, producing careful and well-documented work, understanding why a control exists, and steadily needing less hand-holding - not pretending to know more than they do. The role is measured on trajectory, not finished expertise.
