Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • CRM
  • PRM / Partner Portal
  • Ecosystem & Co-sell
  • Account & Deal Planning

Deliverables

  • Partner assessments
  • Joint go-to-market plans
  • Partnership term sheets
  • Partner business reviews

Responsibilities

  • Carry the strategic slice of the alliance book - the largest, most complex, and net-new / ambiguous technology and go-to-market alliances - to joint pipeline the field can close, owning each joint business plan end to end at a depth that survives executive scrutiny
  • Set the alliance operating pattern the base seat builds to - the joint-business-plan shape, the joint value proposition playbook, the co-sell motion, and the account-mapping and scorecard discipline - so the team runs alliances coherently rather than each person freelancing a method
  • Own the executive sponsor-to-sponsor relationships and the cross-business-unit alignment that unlock the largest partnerships, where a good one-pager is table stakes and senior trust is the motion
  • Shape the net-new alliance bet where there is no template - assess the ecosystem fit, structure the joint value, prove it with an early motion, and decide whether to invest, re-scope, or pass - and bring the strategically-visible calls up with a recommendation
  • Govern the strategic book at portfolio level - run the executive business reviews that reshape where investment is concentrated, and drive the honest invest / re-scope / sunset decision across the book, not one alliance at a time
  • Hold partner-sourced pipeline to a defensible standard at the scale leadership stakes the ecosystem strategy on, and keep the sourced-vs-influenced line the whole team reports to
  • Be the deepest alliance-judgment escalation among the individual contributors - the ambiguous partnership call, the cross-company conflict, the stalling flagship - and mentor the base Alliance Managers through it by example
  • Coordinate the partner's senior alliance leadership, direct sales leadership, product, and marketing on the decisions and handoffs a strategic joint motion needs, so the largest bets complete without avoidable rework

The essence of this seat

The Senior Alliance Manager is the senior individual contributor in the alliance ladder - the person who takes on the largest, most strategic, and least-charted partnerships in the book and, in the process, defines how alliances are run everywhere else on the team.

Signature move

Set the pattern while you solve the one. The first move on any strategic alliance task is to ask what reusable shape it leaves behind - the JBP shape, the positioning, the co-sell motion a base Alliance Manager can run - and carry the hard partnership as the proof of that pattern, never as a private method only you can execute

What good looks like

treats a greenfield alliance as a bet to be structured and priced (falsifiable joint-value hypothesis, a cheap proof motion with pass criteria), not a launch; reads fit honestly including "pass"; brings an invest / re-scope / pass recommendation with opportunity cost; designs the learning to become a reusable pattern; refuses enthusiasm without evidence

Decision rights

  • - the joint business plan and its execution for the strategic and net-new alliances in your book
  • - the alliance operating pattern the base seat builds to (plan shape, positioning playbook, co-sell motion, scorecard discipline)
  • - the executive relationship strategy and cross-BU alignment on your partnerships
  • - the structuring of a net-new alliance bet and the recommendation to invest / re-scope / pass
  • - portfolio-level governance and the EBR verdicts on your book

What this role does

The Senior Alliance Manager is the senior individual contributor in the alliance ladder - the person who takes on the largest, most strategic, and least-charted partnerships in the book and, in the process, defines how alliances are run everywhere else on the team. Where the base Alliance Manager executes a defined set of alliances to a standard, this seat carries the alliances that have no template yet - the net-new ecosystem bet nobody can price, the flagship partnership the field is watching, the multi-business-unit relationship that only moves sponsor-to-sponsor - and turns the way it solves them into the joint-planning, positioning, and co-sell pattern the base seat then builds to. Core ownership is a strategic book run to joint pipeline, plus the operating model behind it: the joint-business-plan shape, the "better together" playbook, the co-sell motion, and the portfolio-level governance that decides where the ecosystem investment is concentrated. This is an individual-contributor seat that manages partners, not people: it reports up to a Director or Head of Alliances / Partnerships, works exec-to-exec with the partner's senior alliance leadership, and mentors the base Alliance Managers by example without holding a single formal report. It is not a base Alliance Manager, who owns a defined book end to end and executes to the pattern this seat sets (the difference is altitude - bigger and more ambiguous book, executive relationships, and standard-setting, not "senior" pasted on the same work); not a Senior Strategic Alliance Manager, who goes narrower and deeper on the handful of crown-jewel, most-complex, board-visible partnerships specifically (this seat holds senior depth across a broader portfolio and the net-new bets); not a Director of Strategic Alliances, who owns the team, the budget, the MDF, and the program design (this IC recommends and escalates those); not a Channel Partner Manager, who runs resellers, deal registration, tiers, and margins for indirect volume; and not a Partner Engineer, who builds the integration and the technical joint solution while this seat owns the commercial alliance. Performance is visible in the joint pipeline of the strategic book, the adoption of the pattern across the team, and the level the base seat operates at because of the mentoring - so senior judgment compounds beyond one book. What separates great from average at this altitude is whether the way you run your alliances becomes the way the team runs alliances: a flagship partnership carried to real sourced pipeline through executive relationships the base seat cannot yet manufacture; a net-new bet you shaped, proved, and then made repeatable; a joint-planning and co-sell pattern others adopt because it is the good way, not because they were told to; and a portfolio call - concentrate here, sunset the visible logo there - made on evidence and taken up cleanly. A mediocre senior hoards the marquee partnerships and becomes an expensive single point of contact; a great one carries the hardest relationships and turns each into a pattern that lifts the whole book.
