Security, Privacy & GRC - Security

Senior Application Security Engineer

Senior / Lead / Staff

Independently audited

Protects the company's systems, data, and customers from real adversaries. Owns the hardest problems in the area and raises the standard of everyone around them.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Vulnerability & Cloud Posture
  • QA & Testing
  • CI/CD
  • Design & Prototyping
  • Analytics & BI

Deliverables

  • Detection rules and tuning notes
  • Risk and architecture reviews
  • Incident write-ups
  • Control evidence packs

Responsibilities

  • Own AppSec outcomes for a domain / product area - set the risk bar, decide what gets reviewed and how, and be accountable for that area's escaped-vulnerability trend (beyond executing assigned reviews)
  • Threat-model complex, ambiguous, or novel systems where requirements are still forming, and turn the risks into testable security acceptance criteria before code exists
  • Set the org's secure-coding standards, secure-by-default patterns, and the paved-road / golden-path tooling other teams adopt so whole bug classes can't recur
  • Perform and lead the hard secure code reviews - business-logic, authorization (IDOR/BOLA/BFLA), and cross-service trust-boundary flaws scanners miss
  • Own and evolve the SAST/DAST/SCA pipeline and CI/CD security-gate strategy at program level, not just tune individual rules
  • Mentor junior AppSec engineers: review their findings and remediation, calibrate their severity calls, and grow their exploitability judgment
  • Drive cross-team vulnerability remediation - align multiple owning teams, sequence the fix, and influence architecture to close the root cause
  • Represent AppSec risk to engineering leadership and to product security / architecture, and make the ship / hold / accept recommendation with the evidence

The essence of this seat

The Senior Application Security Engineer owns application security for a domain or product area, not a queue of assigned tasks.

Signature move

Model the risk before the code exists. On a new, novel, or half-specified system, the first move is to threat-model the design and write testable security acceptance criteria - not to wait for a spec or a finished diff. The highest-leverage AppSec work is priced while the design is still cheap to change

What good looks like

treats inheriting the domain as an ownership problem (map assets/data/trust boundaries/blast radius, read the escaped-and-recurrence history, set an explicit risk bar and "secure enough to ship") rather than clearing a queue; sequences by exploitability x blast radius and by the biggest recurring class; delivers a domain risk picture and leverage moves, not a finding count; routes design-level/cross-org risk up rather than absorbing it

Decision rights

  • - the AppSec risk bar, secure-coding standards, and paved-road controls for your domain / product area
  • - SAST/DAST/SCA rule sets, thresholds, and the CI/CD gate strategy at program level
  • - finding severity and triage across the domain
  • - remediation priorities within the AppSec backlog
  • - the review and calibration of junior AppSec engineers' security work

What this role does

The Senior Application Security Engineer owns application security for a domain or product area, not a queue of assigned tasks. They still live closest to the codebase - secure code review, SAST/DAST/SCA, secure-SDLC guardrails - but the senior mandate is scope, ambiguity, and leverage: threat-modeling complex or novel systems where the requirements aren't written yet, setting the secure-coding standards and paved-road tooling that dozens of engineers build on, reviewing and leveling up junior AppSec engineers' work, and driving cross-team remediation and architecture change through influence rather than authority. This is a senior individual-contributor role; a Senior may mentor junior AppSec engineers and formally review their findings, but typically has no direct reports. It is distinct from the mid-level Application Security Engineer (executes defined work within an established program), from Product Security (product/hardware secure design), and from a Security Architect (whole-system architecture, not hands-on AppSec). At any size the shape is the same; only the number of product areas one senior covers changes. (Fuller narrative in Role Context below.)
