Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Senior Business Development Representative is the senior outbound prospecting individual contributor who creates pipeline in the hardest named accounts, designs multi-threaded outbound plays, codifies repeatable patterns, and mentors peers without formal people authority. It is a Senior IC seat whose central outcome is strategic target accounts produce higher-quality pipeline because difficult outbound work is researched deeply, run across multiple personas, learned from systematically, and converted into reusable team craft The work concentrates on strategic-account research, multi-threaded outbound, executive and technical persona messaging, signal stacking, sequence and call experimentation, account-level pipeline strategy, playbook authorship, peer mentoring, and senior-IC influence without headcount authority. The signature strength is turning ambiguous named accounts and hard-to-reach personas into repeatable outbound systems while remaining a pipeline-generating IC rather than a shadow manager. This seat handles the most strategic or difficult outbound accounts, often with several relevant stakeholders and longer paths to a qualified meeting. It may author sequence standards, mentor BDRs, review calls, and lead field experiments, but it does not set performance ratings, assign territory, approve compensation, or own the BDR team. It remains personally accountable for pipeline creation. The strict boundaries are operational rather than cosmetic. Against Business Development Representative, this seat works more ambiguous and strategic accounts, sets craft patterns, and mentors; the neighbor executes standard outbound plays with less account breadth and autonomy. Against Business Development Manager, this seat influences peers and authors playbooks without headcount, performance, quota, territory, compensation, or formal program authority; the manager owns the team and operating system. Against Account Executive, this seat creates and qualifies strategic-account pipeline; the closer owns full discovery, commercial strategy, opportunity forecast, negotiation, and signature after handoff. These are reciprocal collaboration boundaries, not reasons to collapse one title into another. Every named title remains its own 1:1 role package.
