Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Identity & Access (SSO/IAM)
  • IT Ops (RMM/Asset/Backup)
  • Conditional access / Zero Trust
  • SaaS security posture (SSPM)
  • Endpoint & Device (MDM/UEM)
  • Cloud Infrastructure & IaC
  • Cloud & SaaS cost / licensing (FinOps)
  • Data Governance & Catalog

Deliverables

  • Support resolutions and runbooks
  • Access review evidence
  • Asset and licence records
  • IT standards and policies

Responsibilities

  • Administer the SaaS application estate at scale - tenant configuration, integrations, admin-role model, and the app lifecycle (onboard, govern, offboard) - to a defined, hardened standard rather than console-by-console
  • Own cloud and workforce identity and access - SSO / SAML / OIDC app integration, SCIM provisioning connectors, conditional-access and MFA policy, and the cloud-side joiner-mover-leaver so access is provisioned and reclaimed on the identity lifecycle
  • Configure and enforce SaaS security posture and data governance - tenant hardening baselines, external-sharing and data-loss controls, OAuth / third-party-app governance, and shadow-IT discovery - defined with the security team
  • Run IaaS / PaaS for internal workloads - the landing-zone / account and access model, internal cloud services, and their reliability - as the internal-IT estate, not the product platform
  • Own the cloud device-trust layer - define device-compliance policy and wire the compliance signal into conditional access / Zero Trust access decisions - while routine endpoint enrollment and configuration profiles sit with the systems and generalist IT engineers
  • Own cloud cost and licensing for the internal tools - license reclamation on the lifecycle, right-tiering on usage, renewal and true-up analysis, and cloud-resource cost hygiene
  • Automate the cloud estate - provisioning / deprovisioning, config-conformance, and access-review workflows through iPaaS / IaC / scripting - with a human-review step where the blast radius is real
  • Take the deepest cloud / SaaS escalation - the tenant misconfiguration, the broken SSO / SCIM integration, the identity-plane problem the base seat cannot resolve - and turn the fix into a standard so the class stops

The essence of this seat

The Senior Cloud IT Engineer is the senior IC specialist for the internal cloud IT estate - the SaaS applications, the workforce identity plane, the internal cloud infrastructure, and the cloud spend that a company runs for its own employees.

Signature move

Put it on the identity plane before you administer it. On any SaaS or access task, the first move is to confirm the app is under SSO / SCIM and governed by the baseline - administering app-by-app in a console is the exception, not the workflow

What good looks like

treats the estate as an identity-and-config problem, not 60 consoles; prioritizes SSO / SCIM onboarding by data sensitivity and user count; wires automated joiner-mover-leaver with full cross-estate deprovisioning; puts non-SCIM apps on a governed pattern rather than hand-running them; defines "done" as the estate governing itself with measured coverage, not a cleared queue

Decision rights

  • - SaaS tenant configuration and hardening to the agreed baseline
  • - SSO / SCIM app integration and the cloud-side joiner-mover-leaver executed within policy
  • - conditional-access and MFA policy configuration to the security-agreed standard
  • - SaaS security-posture enforcement and shadow-IT discovery
  • - the internal IaaS / PaaS account / access model and internal cloud services

What this role does

The Senior Cloud IT Engineer is the senior IC specialist for the internal cloud IT estate - the SaaS applications, the workforce identity plane, the internal cloud infrastructure, and the cloud spend that a company runs for its own employees. Core ownership is the administration and lifecycle of the SaaS platform estate at scale, cloud and workforce identity and access (SSO, SCIM provisioning, conditional access, MFA policy), IaaS / PaaS for internal workloads, cloud device management, SaaS security posture and data governance (tenant config baselines, shadow-IT discovery, hardening), and cloud cost and licensing for the internal tools. This is a senior individual-contributor seat reporting to an IT Manager or Head of IT, with deep specialist ownership of the cloud / SaaS layer, close partnership with the security team, and a specialist-peer relationship to the systems engineers. It is not the Senior IT Systems Engineer who owns the systems and identity / directory architecture across on-prem and hybrid infrastructure (this seat specializes the cloud / SaaS estate that architecture underpins, and defers the architecture call), not a cloud / platform / SRE engineer running the customer-facing production platform the company sells or ships on (that seat carries product SLAs, customer on-call, and reliability for revenue-generating services - this seat serves employees and the internal estate, not customers), not the security team who owns the security program, its policy, and its risk-acceptance (this seat implements SaaS security posture and partners), and not an IT Manager who owns people, budget, and vendor contracts (this IC recommends and escalates those). Performance is visible in the reliability and security posture of the SaaS estate, the health of the identity plane, and the cloud spend the estate runs on - so better cloud-IT judgment produces measurable, compounding business impact. What separates great from average is treating the cloud estate as an identity-and-configuration problem, not a pile of app admin consoles: SaaS apps brought under SSO and SCIM so access is provisioned and reclaimed on the lifecycle rather than by hand, conditional access and MFA tuned so the login is a real control instead of a checkbox, tenant configuration held to a hardened baseline as state because SaaS drifts with every vendor release, shadow IT actually discovered rather than assumed absent, and licenses reclaimed and right-tiered so spend tracks usage. A mediocre cloud-IT engineer clicks through 60 admin consoles one ticket at a time and lets access, config, and cost all rot; a great one runs the estate through the identity plane and the automation so it governs itself.
