Responsibilities
- Set and maintain an integrated multi-domain engineering strategy and portfolio-of-portfolios for the large organization delegated to this seat.
- Allocate and reallocate the approved capital envelope across domains, shared platforms, reliability, security, architecture, cost, and transformation investments using explicit scenarios and opportunity cost.
- Design the organization operating model: domain mandates, leadership layers, shared-capability governance, decision forums, technical authority, and cross-domain interfaces.
- Manage and develop Directors of Engineering, Engineering Directors, and principal technical leaders, including mandate clarity, performance, succession, scope growth, and transition readiness.
- Resolve cross-domain priority, platform, architecture-adoption, capacity, customer, and risk decisions that lower leadership layers cannot settle within their mandates.
- Partner with VP Engineering and Product, Finance, People, Security, Legal, and business executives on company strategy, capital, leadership, and operating choices while preserving executive authority boundaries.
- Govern major transformations such as platform consolidation, operating-model change, integration, large migration, cost reset, or rapid scale across several organizations.
- Create comparable executive evidence across domains without flattening their different value mechanisms, risk profiles, product cycles, or technical constraints.
The essence of this seat
The Senior Director of Engineering is the top director tier below the engineering executive layer, responsible for a very large engineering organization or several major domains through multiple layers of Directors of Engineering, Engineering Directors, managers, and principal technical leaders.
Signature move
Open with the enterprise consequence and the boundary of the delegated organization: which company outcomes, domains, capital, and leaders this seat is actually accountable for, and what remains function-wide
What good looks like
normalizes unlike portfolios without flattening them; identifies local-optimum conflicts; makes cross-domain choices while preserving director mandates; marks VP decisions explicitly
Decision rights
- - the strategy, portfolio-of-portfolios, organization operating model, capital allocation, leadership architecture, and aggregate outcomes for the large organization or set of major domains explicitly delegated to this seat
- - the mandates, development, performance, and succession of Directors of Engineering, Engineering Directors, and senior technical leaders in scope
- - cross-domain platform, reliability, security, architecture, cost, and transformation investments inside the approved function envelope
- - major commitments and reallocations within that delegated organization
- - and the integrated executive truth on value, delivery, technical health, people, risk, and capital
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Senior Director of Engineering is the top director tier below the engineering executive layer, responsible for a very large engineering organization or several major domains through multiple layers of Directors of Engineering, Engineering Directors, managers, and principal technical leaders. The seat integrates domain strategies into a coherent portfolio-of-portfolios, reallocates approved capital and leadership capacity among them, designs the organization operating model and succession architecture, and represents the combined truth on business value, delivery, technical health, people, and risk to the VP and executive team. Its core unit is the multi-domain engineering system. A Director of Engineering can optimize one broad domain; the Senior Director must decide when those local optima conflict, when a shared platform or operating capability creates enterprise leverage, which transformations deserve capital, how director mandates and interfaces fit together, and where leadership depth or technical fragmentation threatens the company's strategy. This is long-horizon organization work with immediate operating accountability: the role cannot hide in future architecture, but it also cannot let quarterly pressure consume the platforms, leadership bench, and transitions the enterprise will need. The altitude boundary is critical. The Senior Director runs the largest delegated organization and may regularly partner with C-suite leaders or prepare board material, but it is not the function owner. VP Engineering owns function-wide strategy, total budget, executive leadership bench, and company commitments. The CTO owns company technology vision and enterprise technical authority where that charter exists. This seat can recommend those decisions, model their consequences, and execute the delegated portion, but it must not borrow executive authority from proximity. It is also not merely a larger Director of Engineering: the differentiator is capital movement and leadership architecture across several major domains.
