Signature move
Start from authoritative records for revenue-recognition policy authority and name the owner, decision deadline, evidence, and unresolved exception before accepting a conclusion
What good looks like
reads the side letter's acceptance and return terms through the five-step model on executed terms; tests combined-versus-distinct obligations, control transfer timing, and variable-consideration constraint; delegates the memo and reviews it against precedent; decides treatment and system requirements before signature while leaving commercial and legal terms to Sales and Legal; and escalates a beyond-authority deal or disclosure risk
Decision rights
- - revenue-recognition policy authority, revenue close and disclosures at scale, non-standard deal accounting governance, revenue systems, data, and automation, revenue controls and SOX, and revenue-accounting organization and talent
- - the leadership cadence, role clarity, review standards, capacity allocation, coaching, succession, and operating system needed for the outcome
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Senior Director, Revenue is the leader of the revenue-accounting organization at scale who owns revenue-recognition policy, revenue close and disclosures, non-standard deal accounting, revenue systems, revenue controls, and the leadership bench for the specialty. The role is accountable for this outcome: revenue is recognized and disclosed accurately across products and entities, non-standard deals are governed before signature, revenue systems execute policy consistently, controls remain effective, and the organization scales without shifting commercial ownership into accounting. Its remit spans revenue-recognition policy authority, revenue close and disclosures at scale, non-standard deal accounting governance, revenue systems, data, and automation, revenue controls and SOX, and revenue-accounting organization and talent. At Director altitude, it leads through Revenue Accounting Managers, Revenue technical-accounting leads, Revenue systems and data leads, and Deal-accounting and revenue specialists, designs the operating and leadership system, and remains accountable for aggregate quality, timing, control, decision usefulness, and talent rather than personally performing every task. The boundary is load-bearing:
- Versus Revenue Accounting Manager: The Senior Director, Revenue owns the revenue organization, policy, systems, control model, and cross-company precedent; the Revenue Accounting Manager runs defined revenue-close and policy-execution work.
- Versus Senior Director, Accounting: The Senior Director, Revenue owns the revenue-recognition specialty and its systems; the Senior Director, Accounting owns general accounting, consolidation, and broad close operations at scale.
