Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- GRC & Compliance
- Survey & Forms
- Docs & Knowledge
- ITSM / Service Desk
Deliverables
- Detection rules and tuning notes
- Risk and architecture reviews
- Incident write-ups
- Control evidence packs
Responsibilities
- Design the unified, cross-framework control architecture behind the whole program (SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, NIST CSF & 800-53, PCI DSS, HIPAA, and others in scope) - one control set, shared evidence, a single testing schedule, a named owner per control
- Own control-rationalization and scope-reduction initiatives across the entire control library: retire redundant controls, consolidate overlapping ones, and shrink the audit boundary so testing shrinks every cycle
- Drive new-framework adoption end to end - gap analysis against the existing control set, crosswalk design, the incremental control build, and the readiness plan - where there is no prior playbook
- Lead complex and first-time audits: set the evidence strategy, write the hardest control narratives, own the auditor relationship for the contentious findings, and negotiate scope and interpretation
- Make and document the ambiguous compliance judgment calls - where a requirement is genuinely unclear, defensibility matters, and the wrong read creates real exposure - with reasoning an auditor and Legal can stand behind
- Mentor GRC analysts and specialists: review control designs and questionnaire answers, run scoring-calibration, and raise design quality across the team
- Interface directly with external auditors and internal leadership - translating control posture into a decision leadership can act on and an assurance the auditor accepts
- Diagnose systemic, cross-domain repeat findings for root cause and design the program-level structural fix that stops recurrence across every framework at once
The essence of this seat
The Senior GRC Specialist is the senior individual contributor of a GRC function - the person handed the hardest, most ambiguous, cross-framework work when a base specialist's defined-domain execution isn't enough.
Signature move
Rationalize before you add. The first move on any control, framework, or finding is to ask which existing controls already cover it and what can be retired or merged - net control count should barely move when a framework is added, so the reflex is to shrink the library, not grow it
What good looks like
refuses to punt an ambiguous requirement to the auditor; separates what the requirement demands from evidenced current state; writes a defensible interpretation memo (position, weaker alternatives, current-state evidence, residual exposure) built to survive external scrutiny; dates a genuine gap rather than rewording it; owns the interpretation and escalates only the residual-risk acceptance, not the read
Decision rights
- - the program-level control architecture and crosswalk, control-rationalization and scope-reduction design, the evidence and testing strategy across frameworks, the ambiguous compliance interpretation and its written defense, the audit narrative and the position taken on a contentious finding, and the quality bar for analyst and specialist work you review
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Senior GRC Specialist is the senior individual contributor of a GRC function - the person handed the hardest, most ambiguous, cross-framework work when a base specialist's defined-domain execution isn't enough. Where a Security GRC Specialist owns one domain and executes a defined control-and-evidence mandate within it, the Senior Specialist owns the work that spans domains and frameworks: designing the unified control set behind a multi-framework program, standing up a new framework or a first-time audit where there is no playbook yet, running control-rationalization and scope-reduction initiatives across the whole control library, and making the compliance judgment call when the requirement is genuinely ambiguous and no template covers it. They are the resident authority the CISO, GRC Manager, and GRC Lead call when the answer isn't in a framework document. This remains an individual-contributor role - it reports into a GRC Manager, Security GRC Manager, Governance/Risk/Compliance Lead, or CISO, and is accountable for the depth, durability, and defensibility of the program's control architecture, not for running the team. What separates this seniority from the base specialist is cross-framework judgment, initiative ownership, and mentorship. A base specialist maps and evidences controls in their domain well; the Senior Specialist rationalizes the entire control library so one control set satisfies every framework from shared evidence, is trusted to make the ambiguous call and defend it to an auditor, drives the framework-adoption and control-rationalization programs that reset the whole team's workload, and raises the analysts and specialists around them through review, calibration, and design mentorship - without holding formal management authority (that is the GRC Manager) or owning enterprise risk to the board (that is the GRC Lead).
