Senior IT Engineer

Senior

Independently audited

Keeps the company's people productive and its corporate systems secure. Owns the hardest problems in the area and raises the standard of everyone around them.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Endpoint & Device (MDM/UEM)
  • Identity & Access (SSO/IAM)
  • Team Chat & Collaboration
  • ITSM / Service Desk
  • IT Ops (RMM/Asset/Backup)
  • Practical networking
  • Docs & Knowledge

Deliverables

  • Support resolutions and runbooks
  • Access review evidence
  • Asset and licence records
  • IT standards and policies

Responsibilities

  • Set the standards and paved roads for the generalist IT practice - the endpoint-fleet standard (image, app set, supported peripheral list), the SaaS-estate operating standard, the triage and escalation-tier model, and the onboarding / offboarding operating model the IT Engineers and helpdesk work to
  • Own and grow the runbook library and self-service system for general IT so recurring work is retired at the lowest tier and volume shrinks at the source, not re-fixed one ticket at a time
  • Own the hardest cross-domain problems - the ones that span endpoints, identity, SaaS, network, and AV at once, where no single specialist has the whole picture - as the deepest generalist escalation on the surface
  • Make the technical calls for day-to-day IT operations within existing policy and budget, and set the technical bar at review for the generalist work, so the surface is run consistently rather than by personal preference per engineer
  • Mentor the IT Engineers and the helpdesk technicians - teach the standard, grow their range, and route the growthful hard work to them rather than hoarding it
  • Recommend the endpoint / SaaS / support / AV tooling and standards for the general-IT surface on fit and total cost, and hand the manager a decision they can fund - without owning the purchase
  • Hold the breadth-vs-depth line: recognize the recurring problem that is really a deep systems, identity, or network build, and escalate it to the systems / network specialist with the evidence rather than freelancing a build the generalist practice cannot support
  • Define, with the security team, how the endpoint hardening and patch baseline is implemented and evidenced across the general fleet, and hold the fleet to it - without owning the security program or accepting risk

The essence of this seat

The Senior IT Engineer is the senior generalist and technical lead for general IT - broad across the whole internal IT surface with genuine depth in several areas, who sets the standards, runbooks, and paved roads the generalist practice runs to, owns the hardest cross-domain problems, and makes the technical calls for day-to-day IT operations.

Signature move

Reach for the paved road, not the one-off fix. On any recurring or cross-domain ticket, the first move is to ask whether a standard, runbook, or self-service article already retires this class - and if not, whether this is the one to write - rather than resolving it once for one person

What good looks like

treats a runbook / self-service standard as adopted-and-deflecting, not authored; makes it the genuinely fast, findable path at the moment of need and pushes the self-service to where the user hits the problem; mentors it in and folds technician friction back in; measures deflection and escalation-rate on the class, not the count of documents - success is the class resolving at the right tier without them

Decision rights

  • - the resolution of the hardest cross-domain problems on the surface
  • - the technical calls for day-to-day IT operations within existing policy and budget

What this role does

The Senior IT Engineer is the senior generalist and technical lead for general IT - broad across the whole internal IT surface with genuine depth in several areas, who sets the standards, runbooks, and paved roads the generalist practice runs to, owns the hardest cross-domain problems, and makes the technical calls for day-to-day IT operations. Where an IT Engineer covers the surface hands-on and escalates what exceeds it, the senior decides how the generalist surface is run: the endpoint-fleet and SaaS-estate standards, the triage and escalation-tier model, the onboarding / offboarding operating model, and - the heart of the seat - the runbook library and self-service system that let a whole bench of IT Engineers and helpdesk technicians hold the surface without every hard thing routing to one person. This is a senior individual-contributor seat reporting to an IT Manager or Head of IT, with technical-decision ownership of general IT operations, a mentoring relationship to the IT Engineers and the helpdesk, and a partnership - not an ownership - relationship to the deep specialists. It is deliberately the breadth counterpart to the Senior IT Systems Engineer's depth: the senior generalist owns the wide general-IT surface and defers deep systems architecture (virtualization, identity engineering, backup / DR design) to the systems track, exactly as the base IT Engineer defers the deep build to the base IT Systems Engineer. Performance is visible in whether the whole IT surface stays reliable as the company grows, whether the standards and self-service actually get adopted so volume shrinks, and whether the engineers and technicians mentored operate at a higher bar. What separates great from average at this altitude is turning a personal talent for fixing anything into a system for keeping the surface fixed without you: a runbook library and self-service that retire whole classes of ticket, a fleet and SaaS operating standard the generalists build to so the estate stays coherent, an owned mastery of the cross-domain problem no single specialist can see end to end, and a mentored bench that levels up. A mediocre senior generalist becomes the indispensable hero every escalation funnels to - a single point of failure at a higher salary who is too busy firefighting to ever get ahead of the volume, and who quietly annexes deep systems work they cannot sustain. A great one is the person who makes the whole general-IT practice better than the sum of its people, holds the line on what belongs to the systems specialists, and is measured by a surface that runs well when they are on vacation.
