Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Identity & Access (SSO/IAM)
- Endpoint & Device (MDM/UEM)
- Cloud Infrastructure & IaC
- IT Ops (RMM/Asset/Backup)
- Observability & Monitoring
- ITSM / Service Desk
Deliverables
- Support resolutions and runbooks
- Access review evidence
- Asset and licence records
- IT standards and policies
Responsibilities
- Set the target-state architecture and the build / configuration standards for internal IT systems - reference designs, golden-image / IaC patterns, the automation framework, and the paved road engineers build to - so the estate is coherent, reproducible, and scalable
- Define the hardening, patch, and backup / recovery baselines (with the security team and the business) as the enforced standard the estate runs to, and the exception process when a system cannot meet them
- Own the hardest builds and the design calls within IT systems - the identity architecture, the virtualization and capacity design, the systems that are too complex or high-blast-radius for the base seat - and document the decision so another qualified engineer can continue it
- Lead the major platform migrations, identity / directory cutovers, tooling consolidations, and company-wide rollouts end to end, with transition risk named and validated before launch
- Make the build-vs-buy and design recommendations - evaluate and select or consolidate the identity, endpoint, and automation tooling on total cost of ownership, integration, and exit cost - and hand the manager a decision they can fund and defend
- Set and hold the technical bar through build / design / automation review, and mentor the systems engineers so the standard is taught, not just written
- Be the deepest escalation and root-cause point for the estate - the systemic problem the base engineers cannot resolve - and take the fix upstream into a standard so the class of problem stops
- Reconcile the definitions of system uptime, ticket-resolution time, and automation coverage across the estate before those numbers are used to drive an architecture or investment decision
The essence of this seat
The Senior IT Systems Engineer is the technical authority for internal IT systems - the senior individual contributor who sets the architecture, standards, and patterns that systems engineers build to, owns the hardest builds and migrations, and makes the design and build-vs-buy calls within the internal IT estate.
Signature move
Ask whether this is a standard or an instance before you build it. The first move on any request is to decide whether the answer is a one-off or a pattern the whole estate should follow - if it will recur, the deliverable is the reference design and the paved road, not the single server
What good looks like
treats a standard as adopted-and-enforced, not authored; makes the paved road the easy path (scripted / imaged, faster than the snowflake); makes conformance / drift visible and measurable; mentors it in and folds engineer friction back into the pattern; standardizes where coherence buys reliability rather than mandating everything - measures success by adoption, not the document
Decision rights
- - the target-state systems architecture and internal-IT reference designs
- - the build / configuration standards, golden-image / IaC / paved-road patterns, and the automation framework the engineers build to
- - the hardening, patch, and backup / recovery baselines (defined with security and the business)
- - the hard design and build-vs-buy technical calls within IT systems
- - the technical lead of the major migrations and rollouts
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Senior IT Systems Engineer is the technical authority for internal IT systems - the senior individual contributor who sets the architecture, standards, and patterns that systems engineers build to, owns the hardest builds and migrations, and makes the design and build-vs-buy calls within the internal IT estate. Core ownership is the target-state design and the standard - the reference architectures, the golden-image / infrastructure-as-code patterns, the automation framework, and the hardening / patch / backup baselines - delivered across the identity, endpoint, virtualization, cloud-IaaS, and automation stack. This is a senior individual-contributor seat reporting to an IT Manager or Head of IT, with technical-decision ownership of how the internal systems are built across the estate, deep partnership with the security team, and a mentoring relationship to the systems engineers. It is not an IT Manager (this seat sets technical direction and mentors, but owns no people, no budget, and no vendor contracts - it recommends and escalates those up), not the base IT Systems Engineer who executes builds and runs the joiner-mover-leaver, patch, and backup work to the standard (this seat defines that standard and the architecture and leads the major projects), not the Security Engineer who owns the security program and its detections (this seat defines and implements the hardening baseline and partners), and not a senior generalist, senior cloud, or SRE engineer running the customer-facing production platform (the focus here is internal-systems depth - infrastructure, identity, virtualization, reliability - on corporate IT). Performance is visible in the reliability and coherence of the estate the standards produce, the success of the hard migrations led, and the level the engineers mentored operate at - so better architecture produces measurable, compounding business impact. What separates great from average at this altitude is setting standards that multiply across the estate rather than building one more excellent snowflake: a reference architecture and a paved-road build pattern every engineer follows so the estate is coherent and reproducible, a hardening and recovery baseline defined with security and enforced as state, a build-vs-buy call made on total cost and lock-in rather than a demo, a migration led so the business barely feels it, and engineers who leave a mentoring relationship building to a higher bar. A mediocre senior hoards the hard systems and becomes the single point of failure at a higher pay grade; a great one turns the hardest problem into a pattern the whole team can run.
