Security, Privacy & GRC - Security

Senior Security Ops Engineer

Senior / Lead / Staff

Independently audited

Protects the company's systems, data, and customers from real adversaries. Owns the hardest problems in the area and raises the standard of everyone around them.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Observability & Monitoring
  • Threat Detection (SIEM/EDR/SOAR)
  • Version Control & Code Review
  • Cloud Infrastructure & IaC
  • ITSM / Service Desk

Deliverables

  • Detection rules and tuning notes
  • Risk and architecture reviews
  • Incident write-ups
  • Control evidence packs

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and operate the SIEM / log-analytics data plane: ingestion, parsing, normalization, enrichment, routing, and retention - reliably and at scale
  • Onboard new telemetry and log sources with tested parsers and schema normalization, and keep coverage from silently degrading
  • Build and own the security-automation / SOAR framework - reusable integrations, enrichment, and containment actions that other engineers and analysts build on
  • Own the detection-as-code CI/CD infrastructure (version control, automated testing, backtesting harness, staged promotion) that detection content ships through - the pipeline, not the content
  • Integrate the security-tooling estate (EDR, identity, cloud, network, threat-intel, ticketing) via APIs into a coherent, automated whole
  • Run the security-ops stack as production: SLOs, observability and alerting on the tooling itself, on-call for the platform, capacity and data-cost management
  • Set engineering standards for the SOC's tooling - code review, testing, infrastructure-as-code, runbooks - and mentor junior engineers and analysts
  • Reduce operational toil by automating the repetitive work of running security operations, and measure the toil removed

The essence of this seat

The Senior Security Operations Engineer builds and runs the security-operations engineering backbone - the SIEM and telemetry pipelines, the SOAR and automation framework, the detection-as-code infrastructure, and the tool integrations that the whole security-operations function runs on.

Signature move

Confirm the data is really flowing before you trust the detection. On any coverage, alert, or detection question, the first move is to verify the log source is collected, parsing, and normalized - and healthy - because a detection gap is usually a pipeline gap, and you cannot detect on telemetry you stopped receiving

What good looks like

treats onboarding as a versioned package (collect, parse, normalize-to-schema-at-the-edge, validate, health-check), not "events in the index"; makes parse failure loud with a dead-letter path; pins regression tests and a freshness/parse-rate health check so the source can't go dark silently; hands a ready pipeline to detection engineering rather than writing the detection

Decision rights

  • - pipeline and parser architecture, telemetry onboarding and normalization, the automation / SOAR framework and its integrations, the detection-as-code CI/CD infrastructure and test gates, the platform's SLOs and observability, and the engineering standards for the SOC's tooling

What this role does

The Senior Security Operations Engineer builds and runs the security-operations engineering backbone - the SIEM and telemetry pipelines, the SOAR and automation framework, the detection-as-code infrastructure, and the tool integrations that the whole security-operations function runs on. This is a senior individual-contributor role: it leads no direct reports, but it owns platform and automation strategy, sets the engineering standards for the SOC's tooling, and mentors more junior engineers and analysts. It reports up to a SOC / Security Manager, an Engineering Manager, or security leadership (CISO / Head of Information Security). Keep the lane sharp. A SOC Analyst consumes this platform - they watch the queue the pipelines feed. A Detection & Response Engineer writes the detection content - the rules that run on this platform. An Incident Response Lead commands incidents - using the tooling this role builds. The Senior Security Ops Engineer owns the layer beneath all three: the data plane, the automation fabric, the CI/CD and reliability of the stack. If the SIEM is dropping events, a log source stopped parsing, the SOAR platform is down, or a new tool needs to be integrated, this is whose problem it is. What separates great from average is treating the security-ops stack as production infrastructure - with SLOs, observability, capacity and cost management, and automation that removes toil - rather than a pile of one-off scripts and hand-tuned connectors. The senior engineer builds the paved road others ship on, keeps it reliable at scale, and raises the whole team's engineering bar.
