Design & Creative - Technical Writing

Senior Technical Writer

Senior / Lead / Staff

Independently audited

Makes complex things usable by writing them down properly. Owns the hardest problems in the area and raises the standard of everyone around them.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Docs & Knowledge
  • Authoring format & structured-authoring model
  • Version Control & Code Review
  • API & Integration (iPaaS)
  • Analytics & BI
  • Architecture & Diagramming
  • Content & Asset Management (CMS/DAM)
  • Intake & project coordination

Deliverables

  • Documentation drafts
  • Style and terminology guides
  • Information architecture
  • Coverage and quality audits

Responsibilities

  • Set the doc set's information model and content model - topic types, taxonomy, navigation architecture, metadata and single-sourcing model - so the documentation is coherent, findable, and reproducible as the product and the team grow
  • Own the docs-as-code toolchain standard and the paved-road authoring pipeline (static site generator, source format, version control and review gates, API-reference generation, build and preview) that every writer builds in, and make the build-vs-buy / platform-migration recommendation on total cost and lock-in
  • Define and govern the editorial standard - the style guide, terminology and voice governance, the quality and review bar, and the linting / automation that enforce them - so a body of docs from many authors reads as one and is auditable
  • Lead the hardest documentation efforts end to end - a net-new product, a major API or SDK, an information-architecture restructure, or a docs-platform migration - with the model, the plan, and the transition risk owned before launch
  • Set the docs strategy and the quality metrics (freshness, coverage, findability / search success, task success, contribution health) and instrument them, so quality is a defined, measured system rather than a per-writer vibe
  • Partner with engineering and product leadership on docs-as-a-product - roadmap alignment, docs-blocking risk at scale, and the case for docs investment - and translate it into an architecture the writers deliver against
  • Set the technical and editorial bar through review of the doc set's structure, tooling, and standards, and mentor the writers so the model and the craft are taught, not just written
  • Be the deepest escalation and root-cause point for the doc set - the systemic findability, freshness, or tooling failure the base writers cannot resolve - and take the fix upstream into the model, the pipeline, or the template so the class of problem stops

The essence of this seat

The Senior Technical Writer is the documentation architect for a product's external docs - the senior individual contributor who sets the information model, the docs-as-code toolchain, and the editorial governance the whole writing function builds to, and who personally leads the hardest documentation.

Signature move

Design the model, not the page. The first move on any doc-set task is to ask what content model, topic type, and taxonomy slot the work belongs to - so it sets or extends the system every writer builds in, rather than adding one more well-written one-off that fragments the set

What good looks like

builds the information model / content model (topic types, taxonomy, single-sourcing, templates) first, grounded in reader evidence, over page-by-page cleanup; captures it as a decision record with the trade-off named; frames "better docs" as an architecture project with leverage and a migration sequence, not a tidy-up

Decision rights

  • - the doc set's information model, content model, and taxonomy
  • - the docs-as-code toolchain standard and the paved-road authoring pipeline
  • - the editorial style guide, terminology governance, and the quality / review bar
  • - the technical lead of the hardest doc sets (new product, major API / SDK, restructure, migration)
  • - the API-reference generation architecture

What this role does

The Senior Technical Writer is the documentation architect for a product's external docs - the senior individual contributor who sets the information model, the docs-as-code toolchain, and the editorial governance the whole writing function builds to, and who personally leads the hardest documentation. Core ownership is the doc set's architecture and standard: the content model and taxonomy that decide how every topic is typed, structured, and found; the docs-as-code pipeline and automation the writers author in; the style, terminology, and quality bar that make many hands read as one; and the strategy and metrics that define what "good docs" means for the org. This is a senior individual-contributor seat reporting to a docs / content manager or an engineering leader, with architecture-decision ownership of how the doc set is built, deep partnership with engineering and product leadership, and a mentoring relationship to the writers. It is not the base Technical Writer (../../024_Technical_Writer/), who writes and maintains excellent docs to the information model, tooling, and style standard and owns the docs for their features - this seat sets that architecture and governance across the set and leads the doc no one else can. It is not a Content Designer / Senior Content Designer (../../012_Content_Designer/), who owns the in-product text - labels, empty states, error messages, onboarding microcopy - and the interface's information architecture that shapes the interaction itself; this seat architects the external documentation the reader steps away to consult, a different surface and craft. It is not a Developer Advocate / DevRel, who owns community, advocacy, and evangelism (this seat owns the reference and how-to of record the community is pointed to). And it is not a Docs / Content Manager: this seat sets the technical and editorial direction and mentors, but owns no people, no headcount, and no budget - it recommends and escalates those. Performance is visible in the coherence and scale of the doc set the architecture produces, the success of the hardest doc sets led, and the level the writers mentored operate at. What separates great from average at this altitude is setting an architecture and a standard that multiply across every writer and every product, rather than writing one more excellent guide: a content model and taxonomy that hold as the product grows tenfold, a docs-as-code toolchain that is the easy path so writers actually work in it, a style and terminology standard enforced in the pipeline so the whole set reads as one voice, a new-product or major-API doc set led so it lands complete and correct on day one, and writers who leave a mentoring relationship structuring and reasoning at a higher bar. A mediocre senior hoards the hard doc sets and becomes the writing snowflake-of-one; a great one turns the hardest documentation problem into a model and a paved road the whole team can run.
