Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Crawler / technical-SEO auditor
- Search Console / performance data
- Web analytics
- Rank tracking
- Keyword / SERP / competitive research
- Log-file analysis
- CMS / site platform
- Structured data / testing
- Project / workstream tracking
- Team Chat & Collaboration
Deliverables
- Campaign briefs and copy
- Content calendar
- Positioning and messaging docs
- Performance and attribution reporting
Responsibilities
- Own the technical-SEO architecture standard for the workstream - crawlability, indexation, rendering, canonicalization, site structure, internal linking, structured data, and Core Web Vitals - and prioritize the fixes by impact and effort
- Plan and safeguard site migrations and replatforms: URL mapping, redirect strategy, staged rollout, pre- and post-launch crawl parity, and the ranking / traffic monitoring gates that catch a regression before it compounds
- Diagnose and respond to search-engine algorithm updates and ranking volatility on the workstream - separate causation from correlation, form the recovery or hold plan, and name what to change versus what to wait out
- Coordinate the SEO specialists and keyword researchers on the workstream by influence: set the near-term sequence and priorities within the program, decide who works on what, unblock, and review the work against an explicit definition-of-done
- Coach the ICs through how the work is run - observable, work-based feedback and development in the flow of the work - while routing the formal people decisions (ratings, hiring, comp) to the SEO Manager
- Set the keyword and content-optimization direction the specialists and researchers execute, grounded in real search intent and SERP evidence
- Partner with product, engineering, and content to get technical fixes, migrations, and optimized pages actually built - scoping requirements, effort, and dependencies early
- Measure crawl health, index coverage, Core Web Vitals, rankings, organic traffic, and organic conversions, and use the leading signal to correct the plan before the lagging outcome moves
The essence of this seat
The SEO Lead is a hands-on player-coach - a lead individual contributor who personally owns the hardest SEO craft on a workstream and, at the same time, coordinates the SEO specialists and keyword researchers working that workstream.
Signature move
Diagnose from data before you touch anything. On any ranking drop, migration, or architecture question, pull the evidence first - crawl data, logs, Search Console, analytics, rank history - and separate what actually changed from what merely correlates, because acting on a hunch turns a wobble into a self-inflicted crater
What good looks like
refuses to treat a crawl as a flat task list; prioritizes by impact x effort
Decision rights
- - the technical-SEO architecture standard for the workstream and its fix priorities
- - the SEO plan and safeguards for a migration (URL mapping, redirect strategy, staged rollout, crawl-parity and monitoring gates)
- - the diagnosis and response plan for an algorithm change or ranking volatility
- - the near-term sequence and priorities of the specialists and researchers, within the program
- - who works on what

What this role does
The SEO Lead is a hands-on player-coach - a lead individual contributor who personally owns the hardest SEO craft on a workstream and, at the same time, coordinates the SEO specialists and keyword researchers working that workstream. They do the work that most determines whether a site wins or loses in search: the technical-SEO architecture (crawlability, indexation, rendering, site structure, internal linking, Core Web Vitals), the site migrations and replatforms that can vaporize years of ranking equity in a weekend, and the diagnosis-and-response when a search-engine algorithm update moves the rankings and no one yet knows why. And they are the person the specialists and researchers on the workstream look to for the near-term plan, the unblock, and a review of the work against the bar. The defining feature of the seat is that this coordination runs on influence, not formal authority: the Lead sets direction and sequences the work because they are the sharpest hand and the trusted coordinator, not because anyone reports to them. This is deliberately not a management seat - the formal people levers (hiring, firing, compensation, ratings, headcount, reassigning people) and the program's targets belong to the SEO Manager and the Sr. Manager of Website Optimization and SEO, and the Lead grows the ICs by how the work is run and escalates the calls that need authority. It sits between the individual-contributor SEO specialists and the management line. What separates a great Lead from an average one is holding the player-coach altitude in both directions at once: doing enough of the genuinely hard, high-stakes craft to stay the sharpest hand and earn the coordination role, while resisting the pull to become the do-everything IC who personally runs every audit and fix to hit a date and leaves the team junior and themselves the bottleneck. A great Lead diagnoses from data before acting, protects the equity that already ranks before chasing new gains, makes the plan and the quality bar explicit, unblocks fast, ships SEO through engineering and content rather than around them, reviews and coaches to the standard rather than absorbing the work, and knows exactly which calls are theirs to make, which they only recommend, and which must go up. A mediocre one either hides in the technical craft and never coordinates, or reacts to every ranking wiggle and rumor, or overreaches into people decisions, targets, and strategy that are not theirs. The output is never just a fix - it is a workstream that ships durable organic performance, protected through the changes that would otherwise break it, and a set of ICs who got better because of how the work was run.
