Responsibilities
- Create and schedule posts across the platforms - write the copy and caption, choose format and hashtags, add alt text, handle links and tags, and schedule into the approved calendar slots at platform-native timing
- Draft captions and creative briefs - turn a calendar entry or a campaign beat into a brief the design or video work is built from, and the caption that ships with it, carrying the approved brand voice
- Engage and respond in the community - handle comments, DMs, and mentions within the approved guidelines and voice, and route what belongs to another team
- Monitor mentions, hashtags, and sentiment - watch the channels and social listening, tag and log what matters, and surface a forming issue or a spike early
- Compile social reports - assemble the platform and listening data into the weekly / monthly report against the metrics the Manager tracks, with the read on what worked
- Execute the social push for a campaign or launch - schedule the beats to the plan and the owner's timeline, keep the sequencing right, and flag readiness risk
- Reflect the approved brand voice, community guidelines, and calendar accurately across every post and response, and flag where a post or a reply needs something they do not cover
- Identify and escalate a crisis, a sensitive / legal / media mention, a brand-voice gap, an unapproved claim, and any public backlash forming on a channel
The essence of this seat
The Social Media Specialist is the execution engine of the social function.
Signature move
Check the guidelines and the calendar before you post or reply. The first move is to confirm the post or response fits the approved voice, the community guidelines, and the calendar slot - because on a public channel the wrong tone or an off-plan post is seen before it can be pulled, and a reply sent is a reply the brand said
What good looks like
converts a vague "post something" into a scoped build (platforms, objective, approved and cleared message, slot, creative) before writing; checks the voice and the claim/clearance; will delay rather than ship an unconfirmed claim to be timely; sends the scoping questions back same-day
Decision rights
- - the craft and execution of each post and asset (copy, caption, hashtags, format, alt text, the creative brief to design or video)
- - scheduling posts into the approved calendar slots at platform-native timing
- - routine community engagement and responses clearly within the approved guidelines and voice
- - how mentions and sentiment are monitored, tagged, and rolled up
- - and how the social report is assembled from the platform data
What this role does
The Social Media Specialist is the execution engine of the social function. They take what arrives from the Social Media Manager (071) - the social strategy, the content calendar, the approved brand voice, the community guidelines, the campaign plan - and turn it into what the audience actually sees and the brand actually says: posts written and scheduled to each platform, captions and creative briefs, replies and DMs handled in the community, mentions monitored and reported, and the social push that carries a campaign or a launch. This is an individual-contributor practitioner role, reporting into a Social Media Manager (071), and accountable for running the channels day to day - on-brand, on-schedule, and safe to publish - not for owning the strategy (the Social Media Manager, 071), the content calendar (the Manager), the brand voice or community guidelines (the Manager, with Brand), or the crisis call and any sensitive or legal response (the Manager, Comms, and Legal). It runs each post and each response solo, and its judgment shows most in what it hands up rather than answers. What separates great from average is knowing which moment to execute and which to escalate. A mediocre specialist posts on autopilot, cross-dumps the same asset to every platform, and fires back a fast reply to a mention that turns out to be a lawsuit or a reporter; a public channel then carries the mistake before anyone can pull it. A great one carries the brand voice faithfully into native, well-crafted posts, engages the community warmly within the guidelines, reads a mention for what it really is before answering, and surfaces a forming issue while it is still a draft response and not yet a crisis. The output is never just a full posting queue - it is a channel that sounds like the brand, a community that gets a real answer, and a Manager who never gets surprised by something the specialist saw first.
