Software Engineer - Ads
IC / Practitioner
Independently auditedBuilds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.
Audited package
Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.
Your Stack (Swappable)
This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.
- Serving runtime
- API & Integration (iPaaS)
- Low-latency state
- Offline computation
- Experimentation & Feature Flags
- Observability & Monitoring
- Data Warehouse & Lakehouse
- Source and delivery
Deliverables
- Design documents
- Review checklists
- Technical standards
- Delivery and sequencing plans
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, and operate real-time candidate selection, ranking, pricing, and ad-delivery services under a strict serving latency budget.
- Build and validate budget pacing, spend-cap, frequency-cap, and delivery-control logic across bursty and sparse opportunity patterns.
- Preserve idempotent, attributable ad-event flows for impressions, clicks, conversions, and billable events, including replay and late-event handling.
- Model auction and pricing edge cases such as ties, floors, no-fill, reserve prices, quality adjustments, and second-price or GSP-style rules.
- Instrument request traces that explain why an ad was eligible, ranked, priced, or rejected without leaking sensitive advertiser or user data.
- Run revenue-safe experiments with latency, user-experience, spend-integrity, and budget-delivery guardrails in addition to yield metrics.
- Investigate overspend, underdelivery, mispricing, invalid traffic, auction divergence, and serving-latency incidents with Finance and Risk partners.
- Coordinate clean contracts with Ads Product, Brand Safety, Fraud, Data Science, SRE, and revenue reporting systems.
The essence of this seat
The Software Engineer - Ads is the product software engineer who builds the real-time ad-serving and auction path that selects, ranks, prices, and delivers ads under a hard latency and budget constraint.
Signature move
Trace the auction decision. Reconstruct candidates, eligibility, bid, quality score, pacing state, rank, price, and emitted events for one request before changing the algorithm
What good looks like
distinguishes policy from implementation and proves the price from inputs
Decision rights
- - - The implementation and verification of auction, ranking, pricing, pacing, and serve-time event logic inside an approved ads policy and economic model
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Software Engineer - Ads is the product software engineer who builds the real-time ad-serving and auction path that selects, ranks, prices, and delivers ads under a hard latency and budget constraint. The role's domain is real-time auction mechanics, budget pacing, ad-event integrity, serving latency, and revenue-safe experimentation on the same request that serves user content. Its core outcome is an ad-serving decision that is eligible, correctly priced, within budget, fast enough for the content request, and traceable from auction input through billable event. This is a standalone 1:1 role package. It represents only the Software Engineer - Ads title. A generic Software Engineer package does not replace it, and this package does not replace any neighboring domain, layer, platform, or level title. The differentiation must remain visible in the role's metrics, artifacts, failure modes, operating protocols, stakeholders, interview loop, and Golden Q&A. The altitude and seams are explicit. The Software Engineer owns general product delivery without this domain mandate, while this seat owns ads-serving domain behavior and money-sensitive auction evidence. The Software Engineer - Ads Product owns advertiser-facing campaign, creative, targeting, and reporting workflows, while this seat owns the real-time serving, auction, pricing, and pacing core. The Software Engineer - Brand Safety, Ads owns the suitability and policy gate that determines what may serve, while this seat selects and prices among eligible candidates. Two mental models should be visible in every decision: The auction is constrained allocation and A budget is a feedback-control problem. The work is strong only when those models appear in the evidence rather than remaining vocabulary.
