Engineering & Technology - Engineering

Software Engineer - Developer Experience

IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Builds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Vulnerability & Cloud Posture
  • Local environments
  • Developer CLI and scaffolding
  • Language and editor tooling
  • Test invocation and fixtures
  • Observability & Monitoring
  • Docs & Knowledge
  • API & Integration (iPaaS)

Deliverables

  • Design documents
  • Review checklists
  • Technical standards
  • Delivery and sequencing plans

Responsibilities

  • Measure and improve local setup, dependency install, edit-build-test, debug, and feedback latency across supported engineering workflows.
  • Build and maintain hermetic, incremental, cached, parallel, and reproducible build and test systems.
  • Create local development environments, containers, service orchestration, fixtures, seed data, and dependency emulation.
  • Build internal CLIs, scaffolding, code generation, migrations, linters, formatters, pre-commit checks, and editor integration.
  • Define developer-facing contracts, versioning, compatibility, ownership, documentation, support, and deprecation for shared tools.
  • Design local and CI parity so a result means the same thing before and after code reaches the outer loop.
  • Instrument adoption, errors, build or test latency, cache hit, setup success, support load, and developer satisfaction by workflow.
  • Run pilots and organization-wide migrations with automated conversion, escape hatches, rollback, and measurable benefits.

The essence of this seat

The Software Engineer - Developer Experience is the engineer whose product is the engineering inner loop: local environments, build systems, test invocation, code generation, developer CLIs, linting, and paved paths that make everyday code changes fast and reliable.

Signature move

What this role does

The Software Engineer - Developer Experience is the engineer whose product is the engineering inner loop: local environments, build systems, test invocation, code generation, developer CLIs, linting, and paved paths that make everyday code changes fast and reliable. The role's domain is edit-build-test feedback, hermetic and incremental builds, dependency and cache behavior, reproducible local environments, scaffolding, internal developer tools, migration, adoption, and developer-velocity measurement. Its core outcome is an engineer can set up, change, build, test, debug, and validate code quickly and reproducibly through a supported path that teams trust and can escape when necessary. This is a standalone 1:1 role package. It represents only the Software Engineer - Developer Experience title. A generic Software Engineer package does not replace it, and this package does not replace any neighboring domain, layer, platform, or level title. The differentiation must remain visible in the role's metrics, artifacts, failure modes, operating protocols, stakeholders, interview loop, and Golden Q&A. The altitude and seams are explicit. The DevOps Engineer owns the outer loop from ci through artifact promotion and production release, while this seat owns the inner loop on the developer workstation and code-facing tooling before ci. The Productivity Engineer owns broader business-workflow automation and internal tools for functions beyond engineering, while this seat owns code-facing engineering tools, build ergonomics, local environments, and developer platform usability. The Software Engineer owns the product feature or service and consumes the tooling, while this seat owns shared developer tooling and paved paths used by many engineers. Two mental models should be visible in every decision: Every second multiplies by the organization and Reproducibility creates trust. The work is strong only when those models appear in the evidence rather than remaining vocabulary.
