Software Engineer in Test

IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Builds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • API & Integration (iPaaS)
  • Design & Prototyping
  • Contract Lifecycle (CLM)
  • Analytics & BI
  • Observability & Monitoring

Deliverables

  • Design documents
  • Review checklists
  • Technical standards
  • Delivery and sequencing plans

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement reusable test frameworks, libraries, runners, fixtures, data builders, stubs, simulators, and service-virtualization components.
  • Create deterministic environment and dependency controls for local, CI, integration, and specialized test execution.
  • Build UI, API, contract, integration, performance, load, resilience, compatibility, or device automation where shared engineering leverage exists.
  • Improve test runtime through parallelism, sharding, selective execution, caching, and stable fixture lifecycle without weakening coverage.
  • Detect, classify, quarantine, diagnose, and eliminate flaky tests using reproducible failure signatures and ownership.
  • Produce structured results, screenshots, traces, logs, videos, diffs, and replay artifacts that make failures actionable.
  • Integrate test stages with CI through stable commands, exit semantics, artifacts, resource needs, and retry policy.
  • Partner with product engineers to improve testability, dependency seams, observability, and ownership of feature tests.

The essence of this seat

The Software Engineer in Test is the test-systems software engineer who builds automation frameworks, harnesses, fixtures, environments, CI test infrastructure, and performance or reliability tooling that makes product-quality evidence fast, deterministic, scalable, and maintainable.

What this role does

The Software Engineer in Test is the test-systems software engineer who builds automation frameworks, harnesses, fixtures, environments, CI test infrastructure, and performance or reliability tooling that makes product-quality evidence fast, deterministic, scalable, and maintainable. Its signature evidence includes the test signal contract, the framework API design, and the flake investigation record. The earliest proof that the seat is working is visible in these leading signals: each shared test has a named risk and oracle; flake rate and failure signatures are measurable by suite and owner; tests run in isolated parallel data and identity scopes. It remains an individual contributor reporting through Engineering Manager or Quality Engineering Manager, with QA, DevOps, and product engineers sharing the test contract. This package covers only the Software Engineer in Test roster title. It builds test automation as software, including frameworks, harnesses, deterministic execution, CI test infrastructure, and quality signal at scale. QA Automation Lead remains a separate senior-IC 1:1 role package with group-level strategy and technical-direction scope. The altitude and seams are explicit. The Quality Assurance Engineer owns risk-based test strategy, exploratory testing, defect judgment, and release-quality assessment, while this seat engineers the automation frameworks and test infrastructure. The DevOps Engineer owns the whole delivery pipeline, artifact flow, and release execution, while this seat owns the test tier, its execution contract, and its quality of signal. The Software Engineer owns feature implementation and the closest unit or integration evidence, while this seat provides shared harnesses, patterns, and specialized cross-system automation. Performance or reliability specialists own production objectives and capacity policy, while this seat builds repeatable test tooling and reports measured behavior. Two mental models should be visible in the work. A test is a measurement instrument. Its value depends on what property it measures, its false signal, reproducibility, and the action it enables. Flakiness is an uncontrolled variable. Retries do not fix it. Find time, randomness, shared state, order, concurrency, environment, or dependency escape. For this Software Engineer in Test, those ideas must be visible in its signature artifacts, review request, release decision, and hand-off rather than remaining vocabulary.
