Engineering & Technology - Engineering

Software Engineer - MacOS

IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Builds and operates the software the business runs on. Owns a defined area of the function and the outcomes it produces.

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Native frameworks
  • Apple build and profiling
  • Signing and notarization
  • Packaging and update
  • Local security and storage
  • Observability & Monitoring
  • Enterprise management
  • Source and release

Deliverables

  • Design documents
  • Review checklists
  • Technical standards
  • Delivery and sequencing plans

Responsibilities

  • Build native macOS windows, scenes, menus, commands, preferences, documents, services, notifications, and system integrations using supported Apple frameworks.
  • Design lifecycle and state restoration across launch, reopen, multiple windows, sleep, wake, background helper, termination, and crash recovery.
  • Implement sandbox, user-selected file access, security-scoped resources, Keychain, entitlements, and interprocess communication with least privilege.
  • Maintain code signing, hardened runtime, provisioning, notarization, Gatekeeper compatibility, App Store or direct distribution, and release evidence.
  • Build atomic, signature-verified update and migration behavior with interruption handling, compatibility checks, rollback or recovery, and support diagnostics.
  • Profile launch, responsiveness, memory, leaks, retain cycles, CPU, energy, disk, network, and helper-process behavior on representative Macs.
  • Test accessibility through VoiceOver, keyboard navigation, focus, menus, labels, state, contrast, motion, zoom, and platform conventions.
  • Support Intel and Apple silicon, declared macOS versions, locale, multi-display, input-device, permission, and managed-enterprise configurations.

The essence of this seat

The Software Engineer - MacOS is an IC individual contributor and the native macOS application engineer who builds desktop experiences with Swift, AppKit or SwiftUI, Apple platform integration, sandboxing, signing, notarization, and safe distribution.

Signature move

Reproduce the issue on the exact macOS version, hardware architecture, distribution channel, sandbox state, entitlement set, and upgrade path before changing code

What good looks like

tests the delivered artifact and full nested trust chain and refuses unsafe user bypass

Decision rights

  • - - The implementation, testing, performance, accessibility, compatibility, and operational quality of approved native macOS application behavior

What this role does

The Software Engineer - MacOS is an IC individual contributor and the native macOS application engineer who builds desktop experiences with Swift, AppKit or SwiftUI, Apple platform integration, sandboxing, signing, notarization, and safe distribution. The role's working domain is macOS app and window lifecycle, AppKit and SwiftUI integration, sandbox and entitlements, code signing and notarization, App Store versus direct distribution, atomic auto-update, Keychain and system services, energy and memory, and OS-version compatibility. The seat is accountable for a native macOS application that behaves like a responsible Mac citizen, installs and updates through a trusted chain, uses only approved system privileges, and remains stable across the supported Apple desktop estate. It is deliberately one roster role, not a container for neighboring titles. The boundary is behavioral and operational: this seat owns native desktop lifecycle, sandbox, entitlements, notarization, updates, and macOS integration; the Web Engineer - Product owns browser rendering, web performance, accessibility, SSR, and cross-browser product behavior; this seat uses Apple frameworks, distribution trust, sandbox, and macOS interaction conventions; the Windows Engineer uses Win32 or WinUI, MSI or MSIX, SmartScreen, UAC, registry or services, and Windows compatibility; this seat owns macOS desktop windows, processes, input, distribution, and system integration; the Mobile iOS Engineer owns iPhone and iPad lifecycle, mobile energy, background, device, and App Store constraints. What separates a strong Software Engineer - MacOS from a generic engineer is domain judgment under failure. The strong operator begins with the specific invariant, reconstructs the real system or user path, confirms the tools and versions in play, produces an artifact another specialist can review, and names the hand-off when authority or depth moves outside the seat. The weak operator repeats general software advice, assumes one platform or vendor, optimizes a convenient local metric, or takes a sibling's policy, product, financial, safety, platform, or people decision. The core emphasis for this package is Apple desktop toolchain, AppKit and SwiftUI, lifecycle and windowing, sandbox and entitlements, notarization and distribution channels, atomic auto-update, native performance and energy, and macOS version and hardware compatibility.
