Responsibilities
- Design the lifecycle processes, reference SOPs, and operating standards for people operations - the joiner-mover-leaver patterns, the case-triage and escalation model, the data-integrity discipline, and the paved path the generalists build to - so the operation is coherent, reproducible, and scalable
- Own the ambiguous, escalated, and cross-program cases that do not fit the standard path - the non-standard lifecycle event, the multi-function edge case, the exception a generalist cannot resolve alone - and resolve them within policy, then fold the resolution back into the standard so the class stops recurring
- Lead the hard program builds and lifecycle changes end to end - a new leave or accommodation program, a benefits or entity change, an HRIS or ATS migration, a reorganization operationalized into the systems - with transition risk named, controls validated, and post-change verification before launch
- Operationalize policy and compliance into runnable process - turn a policy owner's or Legal's decision into a documented, auditable workflow the generalists can execute, with the exception path defined and the escalation point built in - without owning the policy or making the legal interpretation
- Set the craft bar at process and case review, and mentor the generalists and administrators so the standard is taught, not just written - the deepest craft escalation and root-cause point before an issue leaves people ops
- Design the self-service, enablement, and automation at the standard level - the reusable article, the manager guide, the human-in-the-loop automation - so the whole team's queue shrinks, not just one operator's
- Reconcile the definitions of case turnaround, transaction accuracy, and data-integrity across the function before those numbers are used to argue for a process or tooling change
- Identify and escalate employee-data, payroll, employment-compliance, or process risk at the function level - and the policy, service-standard, tooling, or headcount decision it implies - to the People Operations Manager with the evidence and the recommendation
The essence of this seat
The Senior People Operations Generalist is the craft authority for people operations - the senior individual contributor who designs the lifecycle processes, SOPs, and operating standards the generalists execute, takes the ambiguous and escalated cases that do not fit any standard path, and leads the hard program builds and lifecycle changes across the people-ops estate.
Signature move
Design the standard, not the instance. Name the class a case or ad hoc approach belongs to and ask whether it is owed a reference SOP or an escalation tier - the deliverable is the paved path the whole team runs, not one more heroically cleared case
What good looks like
diagnoses why the variants exist before designing, builds a paved path that is the easy path (with an escalation branch for the non-standard case), designs for adoption (co-design, pilot, embed in the workflow, mentor the why), measures adoption and fold-back, and recommends rather than mandates - leaving enforcement to the manager
Decision rights
- - the lifecycle process, reference SOP, and operating-standard design the generalists build to
- - the resolution of the ambiguous, escalated, and cross-program case within policy
- - the operational design and lead of a program build or lifecycle change / migration (the plan, the transition risk, the validation)
- - the operationalization of a policy or compliance requirement into a runnable, auditable process
- - the case-triage and escalation model, and the self-service / automation design at the standard level
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Senior People Operations Generalist is the craft authority for people operations - the senior individual contributor who designs the lifecycle processes, SOPs, and operating standards the generalists execute, takes the ambiguous and escalated cases that do not fit any standard path, and leads the hard program builds and lifecycle changes across the people-ops estate. Core ownership is the process design and the standard - the reference SOPs, the joiner-mover-leaver operating patterns, the case-triage and escalation model, the self-service and automation design, and the data-integrity discipline - delivered across onboarding, changes, leaves, offboarding, HRIS integrity, and the case queue. This is a senior individual-contributor seat reporting to a People Operations Manager or Head of People, with craft-decision ownership of how the lifecycle is run across the function, close partnership with payroll, IT, benefits, HR business partnering, and Legal, and a mentoring relationship to the generalists and administrators. It is not a People Operations Manager (this seat designs the process and mentors the craft, but owns no people, no service-standard mandate, no capacity plan, and no headcount - it recommends and escalates those up), not the base People Operations Generalist who executes the established programs and processes the transactions to the standard (this seat sets that standard and takes the case the generalist escalates), not a People Ops Administrator who runs transactional data entry under a process someone else owns, and not a Director of People Operations who owns the operating model and the strategy of the function (this seat feeds evidence up, it does not set the model). Performance is visible in the reliability and coherence of the operation the standards produce, the escalated cases resolved without a rework loop, the success of the hard program builds and migrations led, and the level the generalists mentored operate at - so better process design produces compounding business impact. What separates great from average at this altitude is designing people operations that hold as the company changes shape, rather than heroically clearing the hardest queue at a senior pay grade: a reference SOP and an escalation model every generalist follows so the operation is coherent and the hard case has a home, a leave or benefits program built to run without its designer in the loop, a policy or compliance requirement operationalized into a defensible, auditable process with its owner, an HRIS or entity migration led so employees barely feel it, and generalists who leave a mentoring relationship making sound judgment calls without escalating the routine ones. A mediocre senior becomes the human escape valve for every non-standard case and the single point of failure at a higher salary; a great one turns the hardest recurring problem into a pattern the whole team can run.
