IC / Practitioner

Independently audited

Audited package

Built, independently audited role package. Everything on this page is written for this seat.

Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Recruiting & ATS
  • CRM
  • Boolean / x-ray search
  • Social & Community
  • Sales Engagement
  • Analytics & BI

Deliverables

  • Job descriptions and scorecards
  • Sourcing plans
  • Interview guides
  • Hiring funnel reporting

Responsibilities

  • Translate a calibrated bar or a stack / skill profile into a technical talent map - where the competency lives, the adjacent titles and communities that produce it, realistic supply, and the search angles - before sourcing a single profile
  • Build and run the search - boolean and x-ray strings, platform filters, open-source and technical-community mining - to find the scarce, passive candidates inbound never surfaces, and widen the pool intelligently to adjacent skills
  • Write and send personalized, credible technical outreach and nurture sequences that engage passive engineers, and manage response rates and follow-up rather than one-and-done blasts
  • Qualify candidates at the top of the funnel for genuine fit against the calibrated bar and real interest in the opportunity, so the recruiter receives a warm, on-bar pipeline and not raw volume
  • Build, maintain, and nurture passive talent pipelines and pools over time in the candidate CRM, so the next search on a recurring skill starts warm instead of from zero
  • Hand off qualified candidates to the technical recruiter cleanly - the profile, the engagement context, and what was learned - and close the loop on who converted so the aim sharpens
  • Keep sourcing data honest - accurate profiles, current pipeline stages, deduped candidates, documented outreach - in the sourcing platform and CRM as reliable operating records
  • Feed market reality back into calibration - when the map shows a bar the market cannot fill, surface it to the recruiter and hiring manager as a calibration conversation, not a search to grind against

The essence of this seat

The Technical Sourcer is the top-of-funnel specialist who finds the engineering and technical talent a search needs and gets those people into a conversation - the scarce, passive, not-actively-looking candidates who never show up in the inbound pile.

Signature move

Calibrate the bar before you source. The first move on any search is to pin the must-haves vs the nice-to-haves, the real level, and the geography with the recruiter or hiring manager - sourcing against an uncalibrated wish list burns the market and never converts

What good looks like

translates a tool list into the underlying competency rather than keyword-matching, maps where that competency actually lives (core + adjacent titles, teams, communities, open source), reads realistic supply and flags an unfillable bar, and builds an aimed search from the map instead of a single obvious-platform query

Decision rights

  • - the search strategy and channels, the boolean / x-ray query craft, which pools and communities to mine, which candidates to engage, the outreach message and the nurture sequencing, top-of-funnel qualification (advance to the recruiter or not at your stage), pipeline and talent-pool building, and sourcing-data hygiene in the platform / CRM

Not to be confused with

Unlike a Technical Recruiter (full cycle) and a GTM Sourcer (sales market, not engineering)

What this role does

The Technical Sourcer is the top-of-funnel specialist who finds the engineering and technical talent a search needs and gets those people into a conversation - the scarce, passive, not-actively-looking candidates who never show up in the inbound pile. Core ownership is the technical talent map, the search that finds the right people, and the personalized outreach that engages them, run through a sourcing platform and a candidate CRM so every profile, touch, and pipeline stage stays traceable. This is an individual-contributor seat reporting to a Talent Acquisition Manager, Sourcing Lead, or Head of Talent, working in close partnership with the technical recruiters it feeds and the engineering hiring managers whose bar it sources against. Success shows up early - response and engagement rates, qualified passive pipeline built, and how much of the recruiter's hires trace back to sourced (not inbound) candidates - so sharper aim and better outreach produce measurable pipeline. What makes this seat technical rather than general sourcing is domain depth: fluency in the engineering talent market - where a given skill actually lives, which adjacent titles and communities produce it, how scarce it is, and what an engineer means when they list a stack - and the craft to translate that into a search (boolean and x-ray strings, platform filters, open-source and technical-community mining), qualify a candidate for genuine fit and interest at the top of the funnel, and write outreach an engineer respects instead of deletes. It is not the Technical Recruiter who runs the whole cycle - screen, interview loop, and close (this seat works top of funnel only and hands a warm, qualified pipeline over), not the GTM Sourcer who sources the sales and go-to-market market (same sourcing craft, different talent domain - this seat is the engineering / technical market), and not the Senior Technical Sourcer who takes the hardest and most-ambiguous searches, sets sourcing strategy, and mentors (same craft and market, more seniority and scope - this seat is the core sourcing IC). What separates great from average is aim and engagement, not activity: translating a wish-list profile into the two or three pools where the talent genuinely lives, widening intelligently to adjacent skills and communities rather than spraying the obvious platform, and writing the personal, credible first message that makes a busy engineer with no reason to reply actually reply. A mediocre sourcer keyword-matches a title, blasts a template, and reports how many profiles they touched; a great one reads the market, finds the ten realistic people, reaches them as individuals, qualifies them honestly, and hands the recruiter a pipeline that converts.
