Responsibilities
- Own research plans end to end - from an ambiguous intake question through scope, method choice, execution, validation, and the decision it informs - and close the loop on the follow-through
- Produce study instruments (screeners, discussion guides, usability-test scripts, surveys) with explicit research questions, success criteria, and the decision each study will change
- Select the method to fit the question - generative vs evaluative, qualitative vs quantitative vs mixed, moderated vs unmoderated - and document the trade-off when the standard approach does not fit
- Recruit and screen participants to a sample that represents the real user, run the fieldwork (interviews, usability sessions, surveys, contextual inquiry), and manage incentives and scheduling
- Synthesize raw data into insights that are traceable to evidence, triangulated across sources, and framed for the product and design decisions they inform
- Maintain the research repository and survey / testing tools as reliable operating records - correcting stale ownership, orphaned findings, missing consent records, and configuration drift
- Monitor research coverage, insight adoption, and study turnaround, and investigate a change far enough to name the cause, the affected decision, and the required action
- Coordinate with product, design, and engineering on the questions worth researching, the decisions in flight, and the handoffs so research lands without avoidable rework
The essence of this seat
The UX Researcher owns the generation and communication of user evidence - the seat that turns "we think users want this" into "here is what users actually do, and here is what that means for the decision in front of us." Core ownership is the research plan, the study instruments (screeners, discussion guides, test scripts, surveys), and the synthesized insights, delivered across the standard research stack (a repository, a recruiting / panel source, and survey or usability-testing tools).
Signature move
Start from the decision, not the study. The first move on any request is to name the decision in flight and ask what the team would do differently depending on the answer - if nothing hinges on it, say so before designing anything, because a study that changes no decision is a cost, not evidence
What good looks like
refuses to run on a vague request, works backward from the decision to a real research question, matches method to question (evaluative usability over a satisfaction survey), checks existing evidence first, and delivers a decision-sized plan rather than starting to field
Decision rights
- - the research plan and the method selection, the study instruments (screener, guide, script, survey), recruit and sample criteria, how the study is moderated and run, the synthesis and the insights you publish, the research repository's integrity, and the call on whether a study is valid enough to report at all

What this role does
The UX Researcher owns the generation and communication of user evidence - the seat that turns "we think users want this" into "here is what users actually do, and here is what that means for the decision in front of us." Core ownership is the research plan, the study instruments (screeners, discussion guides, test scripts, surveys), and the synthesized insights, delivered across the standard research stack (a repository, a recruiting / panel source, and survey or usability-testing tools). This is an individual-contributor seat reporting to a Design / Research Manager, with end-to-end ownership of the studies it runs and close partnership with product managers, designers, and engineers. It is not the Product Designer or UI Designer who owns the design solution (the researcher informs that solution with evidence and does not design the interface), not the UX Prototyper & Researcher hybrid who also builds the interactive prototype under test (this seat owns research craft and method rigor without owning prototype construction), not the Data / Product Analyst who owns quantitative product analytics at scale (this seat owns the qualitative and mixed-method behavioral "why"), and not the Product Manager who owns the decision and the roadmap (the researcher advises that decision with rigor and evidence). Quality is visible in research coverage, insight adoption, and study turnaround, so better research judgment produces measurable product impact. What separates great from average is generating evidence a team can bet on and actually acts upon: the right method for the question rather than the researcher's favorite one, a sample that represents the real user rather than whoever was easy to recruit, findings traceable to the observations that produced them rather than to a hunch dressed as data, and a readout packaged for the decision it informs rather than a 40-slide deck nobody opens. A mediocre researcher runs a study, files a report, and watches the team ship on opinion anyway; a great one starts from the decision, sizes the evidence to the risk, and changes what the team does.
