The essence of this seat
The CFO owns the financial truth of the company and the machinery that produces it: the operating plan, the forecast, the close, the controls, the capital structure, and the reporting that the board, investors, and lenders rely on.
Signature move
Know cash and runway before anything else. On any financial question, the first move is to fix months of cash and the levers that extend them - runway is the constraint every other decision bends around, and a great plan with no cash is still out of business
What good looks like
compresses the variance to the two or three lines that carry signal, traces each to a driver and a testable explanation, converts it into a named corrective action with a runway impact and a trigger, and re-forecasts with a bridge - not a color-coded P&L forwarded as "the analysis."
Decision rights
- - the close and the integrity of the books, the forecast and modeling methodology, financial-control design and operation, accounting-policy application (GAAP/IFRS), the FP&A cadence and the quality of the board financial package, and the finance team
What this role does
The CFO owns the financial truth of the company and the machinery that produces it: the operating plan, the forecast, the close, the controls, the capital structure, and the reporting that the board, investors, and lenders rely on. The seat converts strategy into a fundable, measurable plan, keeps the books accurate enough to bet on, protects cash and runway, and turns numbers into decisions the leadership team can act on. It is a build-and-control mandate at the same time - a business partner who models the upside and a controller who guards the downside. At any size the shape holds; only the scale of the capital, the complexity of the reporting, and the maturity of the controls change.
