Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end system architecture and the north-star technical design, and keep it coherent as the system grows
- Personally take the hardest, highest-leverage technical problems - the ones that decide whether the system scales or the company can build the next thing
- Set and steward the technical standards, patterns, and quality bar the whole engineering org builds against
- Make and document the irreversible (one-way-door) architecture decisions - the data model, the core platform, the public contracts
- Prove the risky path is possible - prototype, spike, and land a reference implementation - before the org commits to it
- Guard the conceptual integrity of the system and hold the technical-integrity line when a design would fracture it
- Keep the technical vision aligned with the company vision as a co-founder, at the board and with the executive team
- Raise the technical bar of senior engineers through the architecture and the review, not by managing them
The essence of this seat
The Co-Founder and Chief Architect is a founder who chose to remain the company's deepest technical authority instead of running the organization.
Signature move
Sort by reversibility first. The opening move on any decision is to classify it one-way door vs two-way door - because that, not the urgency around it, decides whether it takes your own hands and your signature or gets delegated to the team and the standard
What good looks like
separates the one-way doors from the two-way doors and spends judgment
Decision rights
- - the system architecture and north-star technical design, the technical standards and quality bar, the irreversible one-way-door architecture decisions, which hard problems get your own hands, and the technical-integrity veto on a design that would fracture the system
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The Co-Founder and Chief Architect is a founder who chose to remain the company's deepest technical authority instead of running the organization. The seat owns the end-to-end system architecture and the north-star technical design, personally takes on the hardest and highest-leverage technical problems, sets the standards and quality bar the whole engineering org builds against, and keeps the technical vision - the conceptual integrity, the "technical soul" of the system - coherent as both the system and the company grow. The role carries founder equity, a board seat, and co-ownership of company direction, but it deliberately does not run the engineering org, own headcount, or manage people's careers - a CTO or VP Engineering does that. Authority here comes from architecture depth and hands-on technical mastery, not from a reporting line. At any size the job is the same shape; only the scale of the system and the stakes of the irreversible decisions change.
