Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Version Control & Code Review
  • Cloud Infrastructure & IaC
  • Observability & Monitoring
  • Eng planning / delivery
  • Board & Equity
  • Team Chat & Collaboration

Deliverables

  • Strategy and operating plans
  • Board and executive narrative
  • Investment and trade-off recommendations
  • Organisational design proposals

Responsibilities

  • Author and steward the company's technical vision, and be willing to outgrow the original architecture that got the company here
  • Own the technology strategy: the platform architecture direction, the build-versus-buy calls, and the technical bets that are the company's edge
  • Build the first engineering team, then the engineering organization and its leadership bench, and hire your own first VP Engineering before you become the bottleneck
  • Scale yourself from the first engineer into a leader: move your leverage from the code you write to the architecture you set and the people you grow
  • Co-own the company's direction with your co-founders - strategy, fundraising, the big pivots - as a founder, not only as the technology function
  • Represent the technology and the founding vision to investors, the board you sit on, early hires, customers, and partners
  • Set engineering targets for delivery predictability and reliability, and steward the technical-debt the first version accrued
  • Steward founder-level stakes: the cap table and dilution as an owner, the co-founder relationship, and your own role as the company outgrows its first shape

The essence of this seat

The Co-Founder and CTO originated the company's technical vision and built the first version of the product, and now owns the technology strategy, the engineering organization, and the technology's part of the company's future - while also holding a founder's stake in the whole company: equity, a board seat, and a voice on direction beyond technology.

Signature move

Name which hat you are wearing. Before deciding, say whether this is a founder call (you own the whole company) or a CTO call (you own technology) - the same question gets a different answer by hat, and when they conflict the founder hat overrules the CTO hat's technical preference

What good looks like

names the founder's own attachment as the risk rather than a credential; separates honoring the original work from keeping it; forces the call onto evidence (real load, failure type) not aesthetics or pride; uses the deep context of having built it as an edge; rejects both founder failure modes (cling and heroic-torch); frames it as carving out the actual ceiling, not a vanity rewrite

Decision rights

  • - the technical vision and platform architecture direction, the build-versus-buy and major technology bets, the engineering-org design and its leadership hires, engineering targets and the technical-debt program - and, as a founder with a board seat, a genuine vote and voice on company direction, not merely an advisory one

What this role does

The Co-Founder and CTO originated the company's technical vision and built the first version of the product, and now owns the technology strategy, the engineering organization, and the technology's part of the company's future - while also holding a founder's stake in the whole company: equity, a board seat, and a voice on direction beyond technology. The role carries two hats at once. As the technology leader, it sets the architecture direction, the build-versus-buy calls, delivery, and reliability as the product scales. As a founder, it co-owns company strategy and fundraising with the co-founders, stewards the cap table it sits on, and is accountable for the mission to the board it serves on. The defining arc of the seat is self-scaling: the first engineer who wrote every line has to become the leader who no longer does, hiring their own first VP Engineering and, eventually, deciding whether to bring professional management in beside or above themselves. At any size the two hats are the same shape; what changes is how much the founder must let go to let the company grow.
