Responsibilities
- Own the technology strategy and translate company priorities into a platform architecture roadmap
- Make the build-versus-buy and major platform, vendor, and partnership calls
- Set engineering targets for delivery predictability, platform reliability, and efficiency, and call a course-correction the moment those leading signals turn
- Establish and run the architecture review process so consequential technical decisions are consistent, documented, and owned
- Own the technical-debt program - carry debt deliberately and pay it down before it compounds
- Determine the company response to material reliability, security, scalability, or technical-debt risk, including escalation thresholds and risk acceptance
- Build, lead, and grow the engineering leadership team and its succession bench
- Partner with product leadership on the roadmap and with security leadership on product security
The essence of this seat
The CTO owns the technology that the company sells - the product platform, its architecture at scale, and the engineering organization that builds it - and carries the technology strategy that decides where the company invests to build, what it buys, and what it retires.
Signature move
Sort the decision by reversibility first. Before deciding how much rigor a call gets, name it a two-way door (reversible - delegate it and move fast) or a one-way door (a data model, a core platform bet, a public API contract - it gets the architecture review and your signature). Speed on the reversible, rigor on the irreversible
What good looks like
applies the differentiation test first (buy the undifferentiated); costs build at total cost of ownership including the operating tail, not the sticker vs licence; redirects scarce engineering capacity to the actual edge; will fund a build only deliberately with an owner named; treats it as a decision to sign, not a reflex
Decision rights
- - the technology strategy and platform architecture roadmap, build-versus-buy and major platform/vendor calls within board-approved bounds, the architecture review process, the technical-debt program, engineering targets and the corrective plans, and the engineering-org design and leadership hires
Working vocabulary
What this role does
The CTO owns the technology that the company sells - the product platform, its architecture at scale, and the engineering organization that builds it - and carries the technology strategy that decides where the company invests to build, what it buys, and what it retires. The role turns company priorities into a platform architecture roadmap and build-versus-buy calls, keeps delivery predictable and the platform reliable as load and headcount grow, builds and leads the engineering leadership bench, and represents technology to the CEO, the board, customers, and partners. At any size the job is the same shape; only the scale of the platform, the org, and the technical stakes changes.
Best-fit customer
organisations that need experienced judgement applied to company strategy, operating performance, and enterprise accountability
