Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Advocacy / reference platform
  • CRM
  • Marketing automation / lifecycle
  • Community platform
  • Review / peer-review sites
  • Analytics / attribution
  • Voice-of-customer / survey
  • Content / story production

Deliverables

  • Onboarding and success plans
  • Account health assessments
  • Business review decks
  • Renewal and escalation plans

Responsibilities

  • Define and own the customer-marketing operating model - the intake, prioritization, program taxonomy, workflow, and the interfaces to sales, CS, and product - so customer marketing scales as a consistent discipline rather than as disconnected campaigns
  • Set the measurement standard for customer marketing - the metric definitions, the attribution approach, advocate / reference health metrics, and the reporting the whole team and leadership use - so a customer-marketing number means the same thing across every program
  • Own the most strategic and complex customer-marketing bets end to end - the executive advisory board / executive-customer program, the flagship reference and advocacy engine, a category-defining customer program - the work that needs the deepest practitioner rather than more hands
  • Advise marketing and customer leadership on customer-marketing strategy - where advocacy, expansion, retention, and community marketing invest, what the discipline can and cannot promise, and how it ties to pipeline, expansion, and retention
  • Be the practice reference - set the playbooks, the definition-of-done, and the craft bar for advocacy, references, customer stories, lifecycle / expansion marketing, community, and voice-of-customer, and be the person the team brings the hard call to
  • Design the advocate / reference program architecture as a governed system - how advocates are recruited, tiered, rewarded, protected from over-ask, and matched to sales and marketing demand - not a scramble against whoever said yes last
  • Own the customer-marketing instrumentation and evidence standard - what "influenced pipeline," "reference-influenced win," "advocate health," and "expansion-influenced revenue" mean and how they are evidenced across the tools
  • Raise the practice of the customer marketers and adjacent teams without managing them - through the model, the standard, review, and coaching on craft, not through headcount authority

The essence of this seat

The Principal Customer Marketing Manager is the customer-marketing discipline's top individual contributor - the deepest practitioner in the practice of marketing to and through a company's existing customers (advocacy and references, customer lifecycle and expansion / retention marketing, customer community, executive-customer programs, and voice-of-customer), who scales the discipline through an operating model, a measurement standard, and the hardest bets rather than through a team they manage.

Signature move

Solve it at the model layer, not the one-off. The first move on any ask is to check whether it is a one-time program call or a pattern the discipline will keep meeting - and if it recurs, fix it once in the operating model (intake, taxonomy, standard, interface) rather than hand-craft another campaign. Ask "what regenerates this across the team?" before building the single answer

  • - the practice standard and definition-of-done across advocacy, references, customer stories, lifecycle / expansion marketing, community, and voice-of-customer

What this role does

The Principal Customer Marketing Manager is the customer-marketing discipline's top individual contributor - the deepest practitioner in the practice of marketing to and through a company's existing customers (advocacy and references, customer lifecycle and expansion / retention marketing, customer community, executive-customer programs, and voice-of-customer), who scales the discipline through an operating model, a measurement standard, and the hardest bets rather than through a team they manage. The scope is authority, not headcount: this seat defines the customer-marketing operating model and the measurement standard the whole team's programs run inside, owns the most strategic and complex customer-marketing bets and the executive-customer programs (the executive advisory board, the flagship reference and advocacy engine, a category-defining customer program), advises marketing and customer leadership on customer-marketing strategy, and is the practice reference - the person the team and adjacent functions route the hard customer-marketing call to. It is a principal / top-IC seat reporting to a Director or Head of Customer Marketing, and it holds no people-management authority: no direct reports, no performance cycle, no org design. Its core contribution is turning customer marketing from a pile of one-off campaigns into a governed, measurable discipline that scales without the principal touching every program - a shared operating model, a metric that means the same thing across every program, an advocate base that is protected rather than mined, and a standard the whole team is held to. It is deliberately not a manager seat and not a single-program seat. The principal does not run a team, set headcount, or make the people calls (those are the Director's / Head's), and does not run the day-to-day of one program the way a Customer Marketing Manager or Customer Advocacy Manager does - they set the pattern every program follows and carry the bets that need the deepest practitioner. What separates great from average is whether the discipline gets better when the principal is not in the room: an operating model and a measurement standard so clear that every program is good without the principal touching it, a strategic bet delivered that no one else could carry, advocates treated as a finite human asset rather than burned, and leadership advised with the honest truth of what customer marketing can and cannot move. A mediocre principal becomes an oversized program owner who hoards the interesting work, lets each program define its own metrics, and advises leadership with what they want to hear; a great one is a force multiplier whose model, standard, and judgment make the whole discipline scale, and who is trusted with the hardest bet and the most important customer relationships precisely because they have no positional power to fall back on.
