Your Stack (Swappable)

This role works against whatever tools you already run. We list the tool categories the role operates in, never a named vendor, so you are never asked to replace a system that works.

  • Enterprise strategy and portfolio
  • FP&A & Planning
  • Performance & Engagement
  • Architecture & Diagramming
  • API & Integration (iPaaS)
  • Board & Equity

Deliverables

  • Strategy and operating plans
  • Board and executive narrative
  • Investment and trade-off recommendations
  • Organisational design proposals

Responsibilities

  • Set the multi-year enterprise engineering execution strategy across major divisions, tying company strategy and technology vision to capital, platforms, organization, leadership, and measurable outcomes.
  • Integrate VP portfolios into enterprise choices, resolving duplicated investment, shared dependencies, conflicting customer commitments, constrained expertise, and company-wide technical risk.
  • Recommend and govern movement of engineering budget, headcount, executive leaders, cloud, vendors, and transformation capacity among divisions using explicit scenarios and stage gates.
  • Design the enterprise engineering operating model: VP mandates, centralized, federated, or hybrid capabilities, principal technical authority, cross-division forums, and escalation paths.
  • Build and assess the VP bench, succession, emergency coverage, complementary leadership design, and development moves for materially larger scope.
  • Govern company-level platform, build-buy-partner, acquisition integration, quality, reliability, security, cost, and developer-system transformations.
  • Create one enterprise fact base across division outcomes, commitments, forecasts, technical health, capital use, talent, and material risk.
  • Partner with the CEO, CTO, COO, CFO, CPO, People, Security, Legal, and business executives on company strategy and operating choices while marking final authority explicitly.

The essence of this seat

The Senior Vice President, Engineering is the top engineering executive below the C-suite, responsible for engineering across the company or multiple major divisions through Vice Presidents of Engineering.

Signature move

Begin with the company system, not a roll-up of VP plans. Identify cross-division capital, platform, customer, leadership, risk, and operating-model interactions that no single division can own

What good looks like

creates comparable enterprise evidence without flattening domains; resolves shared capacity and customer conflicts as company choices; makes an actual portfolio recommendation rather than rolling up status

Decision rights

  • - the enterprise engineering execution strategy, portfolio-of-portfolios, cross-division capital and leadership recommendations, VP mandate system, enterprise platform and operating-model choices, company-wide engineering transformations, and the integrated CEO and board truth for engineering across the company or multiple major divisions

What this role does

The Senior Vice President, Engineering is the top engineering executive below the C-suite, responsible for engineering across the company or multiple major divisions through Vice Presidents of Engineering. The seat integrates several function or division strategies into a multi-year enterprise engineering execution thesis, reallocates company engineering capital among them, designs the VP and principal-leadership architecture, and carries CEO and board-facing accountability for delivery, platforms, technical health, leadership depth, and major transformation. The unit of work is an enterprise system of systems. Each VP may have a sound local plan, yet the company can still lose through duplicated platforms, incompatible architecture, scarce talent trapped in one division, conflicting customer promises, inconsistent security or reliability posture, or capital protected by historical ownership rather than current value. The SVP must resolve those interactions, decide what should be shared or federated, move budget and leaders before local plans harden, and create comparable evidence without flattening the real differences among products and businesses. The altitude boundary is explicit. VP Engineering owns one function or division and its operating plan; the SVP integrates multiple VPs and enterprise engineering choices. The Chief Technology Officer owns the company's technology vision and external technical authority where that charter exists; the SVP owns the scaled execution organization and capital system. The Chief Operating Officer owns company-wide operations across functions; this seat remains in engineering. The CEO owns company strategy, total capital, executive appointments, and board commitments. This package represents only Senior Vice President, Engineering under the strict 1:1 policy.
